Does anyone have an idea of how rare or production numbers
on a 12-2 4 inch ROUND Butt ?

Something I am looking at. Gun is 95% but without the box. I think it spent it's life in a nightstand drawer....

btw...blued finish

No definitive information, but it got me to thinking. I believe they are in the same boat as the 2" square butt. I've seen a lot more 4" square butts, but also have seen a lot more 2" round butts. I'm not even sure Smith could provide you with that information since they were numbered sequentially without regard to butt configuration. I have a 2" RB blued -3 that I would gladly trade for an equal condition 4" RB.

Somewhere, many years back I remembered reading an article on the 12.

Most all of the 4 inch versions I have seen have been square butt models. And the 2 in in mostly RB, once in a while a 2 SB.

One of my old friends has his Dad's 12-1, nickle 2in, RB.
:( I keep asking about it....but not for sale.

Maybe someone else will add some info on this for me.

How rare? 4" ROUND butt model 12?

I just picked up a 4" ROUND butt model 12-2. It's only the second one I've seen in a couple of years of looking. (First was ANIB W/Box and way too nice to use as a carry piece). They just don't seem to show up very often.
By the way, I also have a 2" SQUARE butt 12-2 w/flat latch and a 2" round butt 12-3.
So..... how 'rare' are the 4" round butt model 12s?

There doesn't seem to be alot of information on this.

When I first posted this, I was looking for at one at a LGS. And the one I was looking at was priced right out of sight.

But my wife found one by accident at a garage sale a few weeks back in 98% condition and bought it for me as a early Xmas gift.

Long story short, the gun belonged to this elderly womans husband, puchased new back in 1971 come to find out. She was moving to an assisted living center and cannot have firearms there.

It was sheer luck that my wife found this. And the the woman was not going to let it go for anything less than $150..

My wife said she couldn't get the money in her hand fast enough.

Sigh, no longer legal to sell guns at garage sales in Ca. At that price, I'd say she 'stole' it. Very nice. I did pay a bit more for mine. Still, they don't seem to show up very often.
