Anybody else surprised about the Shield

I love my new 9mm shield. I'm tempted to get rid of my j frames and full size glocks. The Shield might do everything I need done!!! Of course I would get one or two more Shields to take their place!!!

................ While the Ruger LC9 is more a pocket pistol I was afraid it was just too small and recoil might also be a factor.....................

There is a not a hair's worth of difference in the size/weight between the LC9 and the Shield 9. I own both and the Shield gets the nod as my EDC due to the better trigger, sights and consistent accuracy. Both pistolas have over 1K trouble free rounds down range. Here are some pics to show the relative size comparison:

My full size XD 45 collects dust after I purchased the Shield. I can hit the black of a 50 ft rated Target at 25 yards with my Shield

I have heard so many conflicting views on the Shield. At times I want to buy one....but a bit hesitant after reading some threads on here and other forums.

So what are you're reservations on buying one? I am curious what "so many " means, and if it is that much why you would still consider one?

Before I buy anything I usually check the internet for reviews good or bad. On the shield I didn't do that because after reading some bad reviews on the Ruger LC9 I decided I would just get the shield seeing as it was the right size, right caliber and made by S&W. Glad I did now as the 9mm seems to be the most trouble free of the .40 and 9mm. I must have lucked out on my choice because I have had zero problems and would stake my life on this pistol which I do everyday I carry it. If you are looking at the shield 9 I would buy now if looking at the .40 I might hold off till they get the mag drop problems fixed.

I have owned MANY subcompacts over the years, and shot quite a few others. I've never been a subcompact fan... I just never shoot them as well as a fullsize gun. And, consequently, I do not shoot them much.

A few years ago, I moved up to a fullsize Beretta 92 for my concealed carry gun. That solved this issue for me.

But, I got a 9mm Shield when they first came out. First subcompact I REALLY liked. Never shot one that well before. Even picked up a 2nd one at looking for 2.5 months. I REALLY like this gun and shoot it well out to 15 yards (longest distance of my indoor range)

Haha. Only can do it at the 3 o'clock position:

Yup, Right now I only have a M&P 9 fs for carry, and I carry it concealed every day, though keeping my eye out for a shield (hence being in this thread) A good IWB @ 3 o'clock is the best way to conceal carry as FS piece. Ohh and a LOOSE fitting overshirt, thicker the better so it does not drape/hang on the grip/sights.

Have had the Shield .40 for about 4 months now. It is the EDC and has NEVER dropped a mag. Lots of rounds down range. Conpletely reliable.

I'm glad to hear you have had good luck with the LC9. I bought an LC9 earlier this year and two months ago it went click when I pulled the trigger. Called Ruger sent it in they replaced broken firing pin, firing pin retainer, and firing pin spring. Got it back fired 1st part of August fired 200 rounds no problem two weeks later took it to the range fired one round then it went click. Sent it to Ruger they replaced broken firing pin, retainer pin, firing pin spring. The ammo i used was 115 gr seiler and beliot, federal , pmc. Traded the LC9 on Sept 8th for an M&P 9c. Really like the 9c want a shield to replace the LC9. Really wanted to like the LC9 (hated the trigger) but liked the size and design. Guess I got a lemon from Ruger.

My .40 Shield is not my favorite shooting gun, but it is surprisingly pleasant to shoot for a .40 cal in such a small package.

However, in most other respects it may end up being my favorite pistol. Small enough to pocket carry. Thin enough to carry IWB comfortably. Easily concealed when carried OWB. Safety, slide release and mag release all easily manipulated. All of that chambered in .40 cal.

I'm surprised that S&W was able to put all of that in a subcompact. Hard to beat.

I'll second this.

Though in my heart I am a SW guy, I have to confess I carry a G27...I love the G27, but honestly, its a tad "beefy" for what I'd prefer to carry IWB.

The Shield platform is really quite comfortable. I didn't have any mag-drop problems in 500 rounds, so I can't comment there. Sights aren't my fave, but they are such a personal feature it's hard to fault any manufacturer for its factory sights.

In the interest of full disclosure, I'm not going to hold on to my Shield 40 (personal preference ... I'm persnickety about triggers on pistols and throttles on motorcycles, and don't want to modify with the Apex kits).

Having said that, it is every bit as accurate as my G27, with (imo) far lighter recoil. For a slim 40, this surprised me a lot. But for my "personal preference" issues with the trigger, the Shield 40 would have brought about the retirement of my G27.

I'm certainly no S&W fan; actually I sold off every S&W I had several years ago. I am quite the AR fan (Colt Fanboy) and recently got the bug for a 22 rimfire AR. The M&P 15/22 rules the roost in that venue, so I picked up the MOE edtion. What a 22 carbine that thing is. The AR manual of arms and even so parts compatibility. 5000 rounds and I'm sold on it.

Nest came the bug for a useable 9mm sub-compact or micro-compact. I bought a Ruger LC9 for my son as I believe its probably a better carry pistol for a first timer. It shoots even worse than the LCP, but it's slim, safe and has excellent support. Plus I bought it for $349!

Afret my due diligence I bought a 9mm Shield and was immediately impressed with it's capabilities. The trigger was decent and the sights were average, but it handled and carried very well.

Adding the APEX carry kit and XS express sights helped with the trigger and sight weakness

It's taken me 200 rounds to acclimate to the APEX kit and the BigDot Express sights, but today at the range I was shooting baseball size groups at 7 yards. Next I'll stretch it out to 15 yards and then to 25...

Next on the list was something about the same as the shield, but in 45ACP! So I bought a Springfield XDS and have been similarly impressed with it. One thing about the XDS.. It will jack your elbow and shoulder pretty good. At first 50 rounds was more than enough, but now I'm up to 100.. More to come.. Ron
