Anybody think this is real

Last year, went to a local gun show and purchased a 1951 Colt DS from a dealer, supposedly in it's original box. Got home, started to inspect the paperwork, then immediately went back to the gun show to negotiate a price "adjustment", since the box and paperwork were fake, a "Sparta Special". The dealer professed that he wasn't an expert on boxes or paperwork but wanted to know how I knew. Seems the list of dealers showed ZIP codes which didn't come into being until the early '60's...impossible to be included with a pistol made in 1951. We got a reasonable refund and left on amicable terms but now I'm very wary of any nice, boxed handguns...from any dealer, especially that one.

I bought my M27-2 (5"), M25-2 (6.5") in 1977 & 1979 (& a M57 stupidly now gone) New from dealer in blue box with presentation box packed separately. Believe they were BangorPunta.
No opinion on the genuineness of the box in question. Any boxes I still have don't look that good.

I've been reading this thread, always looking to learn something new. I find myself a bit confused. A lot of the feedback, declaring the box a fake, relates to what S&W did in the 60s and 70s, up until 1979. The OP indicated that the seller claimed to have bought this gun, brand new, 30 years ago, which was 1986. Does the information provided about '70s era revolver boxes also apply to a 1986 model?

wi.st.rod...the serial number on the label in the first post dates the 29-2 to 77/78. It would not have been packaged with a blue box even if it was in a dealer's case for eight or nine years (highly unlikely) and purchased "new" in 1986.

I just learned something! Many thanks.

Model 29-2

The first Model 29 I ever had was a Christmas gift in 1979. It had the shipper box with the label on it, the presentation box packed inside the shipper box, a long plain blue box with no printing at all that contained the revolver, and a perfectly scored cardboard insert that prevented the blue box from moving around during shipping. The dealer that this was purchased from in 1979 received Model 25, 27, 29, and 57 revolvers like this regardless of the barrel length. As we know that prior to this the revolver was placed in the blue-fuzzed plastic liners and shipped this way. What I described above was a black-plastic liner with a thin sponge covering and a sponge inside the lid. We also know that this sponge material broke down over the years. It would be nice to go back.

I say the label is fake. I bought my 29-3 in '87 and still have the blue S&W box (excellent condition) and the end label is printed.

That is exactly the way my M25-5 came in 1980. And the liner in the Wood case deteriorated in exactly that way.
