I know it's probably been asked before but I couldn't find it so I am asking if anyone carries a single action revolver for ccw? I occasionally carry my ruger Montado 357.
Anyone carry one?

While they're fun to shoot I've never heard of anyone I know carrying one. Back-in-the-day our off duty guns had to have agency approval and we had to qualify. Things were strictly enforced so most retired LEOs in my neck of the woods still abide by these rules.

I don't know of anyone who carries one, but if someone does, and they spend some time getting proficient with it, who really wants to question their choice? I think it's still a viable choice for the average armed citizen, as long as they are aware of the differences between it, and more conventional modern arms used for CCW.

Well, don't the single action guns have to be carried with the hammer resting on an empty chamber? I'm not up on these, so I don't know for sure. Anyway, that's a large gun to carry just 5 or six rounds. And reloading? You might as well carry a second gun. To each his own, but that's a sketchy proposition...

I don't know if anyone carries them but they sure bring 'em to our conceal carry classes. Wish they didn't, and I may require they not bring single actions in the future.
The state class has us teach a few special things specifically for single action carry, esp. the empty chamber rule. I just don't like them b/c the live fire qualification is 20 rounds and it just takes longer to get through the test. For some reason most of those who have brought them to class are pretty inexperienced with handguns, so it only amplifies their anxiety when trying to master single action loading and shooting when they're already feeling nervous.
Up to the person but I wouldn't carry SA. I'm not nearly good enough with them for that situation.

I carry a SA Black Widow in .22 Magnum. It's perfect for lightweight carry in the Florida heat.
Slow to fire one handed, slow to reload. What's not to like? There might be monetary considerations involved... but if a single action is all you're comfortable with AND you're serious about CCW, it might behoove you to take the time to become comfortable with something more advantageous.
If you CCW just because you think it's neat that you can, then go for it.

technically. my carry gun was a 629 for many years. it being a gun best savored, in single action. Since most of my shooting was in SA I assume I'd default to my numb thumb ways in the clutch.

I carried a 4 5/8" NM Blackhawk .45 for a few years.
It was the only handgun I had at the time.
I shot it enough to get reasonably proficient with it.
I felt well-enough armed with it.

Not often, but I have and will again. I'm comfortable with my three, I shoot them well, and that big ol' .45 Colt or .44 Mag just seems right at times. By the way, one of mine is the Uberti Schofield. It loads and unloads about as fast as most double action revolvers. One is the Berretta Stampede (Colt SAA clone) which points like nothing else for those "up close and personal" moments, and the other is a Ruger Super Blackhawk.
I'm not sayin' there the best choice or even the wisest choice for most folks; just a choice that I make from time to time. It is, afterall, my choice - isn't it?

When I first got my license in 1978, a "old timer" at our club used to carry a single action every day. I never saw him shoot anything other than the single action. His follow-up shots were pretty quick too--he seemed to just flick his wrist to get back on aim and he'd be ready to fire again.
He wore it cross draw in front of the hip. I don't know what he wore over it in warm weather. With a coat on it was concealed pretty well.
With practice, in an open carry state, I think it would be OK, but re-loading would be awfully slow.

66Snub, transfer-bar Rugers are safe with six loaded. I don't even own a holster for either of mine, but I have a friend who admires his SAs a great deal. He just bought one of the Ruger Flat-tops in .44 Special and has been wringing it out to see what it's made of, and whatever it is, it must be pretty good. He showed me a couple targets at right around 3-inches fired offhand, 40-yards. This fellow would be just fine about anywhere I know of with his SA revolvers. He knows his guns. I know several guys like him and I would be glad to have them close by if things got ugly. If they thought they needed more firepower, they would probably just wear two guns.
