I do like Hogue Monogrips. As attractive as the wood ones are, I do not have any of those. My DA revolvers are all working guns and I would not want to mar the beautiful wood grips. My preference is the nylon version.
During my PPC competitive days I used either the nylon Hogue Monogrip or the Rogers (later Safariland) grips. It was a very close call. Details some other time.
I wanted to be able to get a secure grasp of the revolver, but not so secure that I could not adjust my hold, if necessary, while firing a competition string. The stippled finish, for me (YMMV) was and is ideal.
During the time I taught the state mandated CA CCW course, I introduced a substantial number of revolver shooters to the rubber Hogue Monogrips. Without exception this conversion, especially on S&W J frames, substantially improved their shooting, and as a consequence, their confidence.
On SA revolvers, it has to be stag, or faux stag as our western B movie heroes used. I think that is right in the Code of the West. If it isn't, it should be.
