Anyone SBR their 15-22?

other than looks (awesome) what is the advantage to SBR

Size and weight are two of the biggest factors. It comes into play more when the rifle has a specific purpose in which an SBR makes the rifle more capable.

If you carry it during hunts in the woods it will be lighter allowing you to carry it with less fatigue, and it will be shorter and easier to move through brush. Both factors will make it quicker to shoulder, and easier to keep on target unsupported

A SBR rifle needs a smaller case and can more easily be packed onto the rack of an ATV, slung on your back out of the way more easily, and stowed in your vehicle more easily.

If the NFA minimum barrel length for rifles was shorter than 16" I guarantee the majority of people would own ARs and other sporting rifles right at that limit.

You know as much ammo as as I am putting through this thing and as cool, and easy as it would be for me to SBR it? that could happen.

yeah it's 200 bones but you know a 10.5 inch with chopped rails would be slick ****.

Also if you mean you don't understand what the SBR laws are preventing it is the control you gain having a good stock and foregrip (if you choose) versus a pistol grip. and the balance of concealability/ lethality. in other words it's B.S.

You might as well buy the 15-22P instead of chopping up a nice rifle

If you want to buy a pistol to convert to SBR the Sig522 SWAT Pistol is perfect. 10.5in barrel and a stock can easily be put on.

From the ATF web-site:

"Q: May the short barrel on an SBR or SBS be replaced with a long barrel for hunting or other purposes, with the intent of replacing the short barrel?
Yes, and you will not be required to again register the firearm before replacing the short barrel. ATF recommends written notification to the NFA Branch when a firearm's configuration is permanently changed or removed from the purview of the NFA"

This clearly states that you can change it back and forth from an SBR to a regular rifle. Once the receiver is registered as an SBR you can swap uppers back and forth in different barrel lengths, calibers, etc. It is recomended that you send the ATF a letter letting them know you are changing it but by the regualtions it does not look like it's required, only recomended.

I SBR'd an AR15 lower and now have it set up with a 10.5" barrel and suppresor and this is the way I would do it if I were you instead of SBRing a 15-22. This way you can change calibers and barrel including putting a 22LR upper on it.

Well...

See, I'm located NOT in the US, and for once am happy that I don't have your firearms legislation to deal with.

NOTE: The firearm depicted below is 100% legal in my jurisdiction! Please DO NOT try to emulate the modifications if they would break the law.

Here is my 15-22P:

I like it.

:cool:Paulthesaffer, Nice rig. Where are you located? I'm waiting on approval to do a SBR on my pistol.:D

Dodgeds, how are you going to attach a stock to your 15-22p? A SBR really needs to start with a rifle so you have the receiver extension to mount a stock to.

Folding Stock?

I been looking at the folding stock option. From what I see on the internet it looks doable. If my approval ever comes back. I'm also looking at suppressors. They come in 7\8" , 1" , 1.25"x different lengths. I'm looking for something closer to 1.4" x 7. Anybody seen one?

South Africa... hence the 'Saffer' in my username (South African's tend to contract the 'South African' into something like 'safrican' when talking).

There are at least a couple of us on this forum.

We suffer under a rather iniquitous Firearms Control Act (thanks to Wendy Cukier and her other Canadian mates) but, in this instance at least we are significantly 'free'er' than you lot. Suppressors, stocks, VFG's, whatever you want to add you can!

Since it would be illegal for you to do this I am loath to describe how very easy it is. If you PM me however...;)
