AR 15 5.56 /223 Wanted

I wish I got Christmas presents like that!
I have been dropping hints to the wife, she doesn't think I need another gun, and she is right. I don't hunt, never have, my parents are anti-hunting, both say quite often "I hunt meat at the grocery store". I'm not like that at all, but I don't hunt. I digress.
I have been looking for a ar for a while. The whole rate of twist threw me off. & its crazy one rifle looks like the other with a couple hundreds of dollars difference. It's mind boggling. And every place you look for adv ice seems to have "fanboys" that tear down anything other than that brand. I just want to know, for my own sake, what is the difference between a colt, S&W, DPMS, or say Daniels Defence?
I was always taken by the "mil-spec", but where can I find this list of specs so I can compare them for my self? Then I hear about the "technical data package" and even more confused. Does it even matter if John Doe has a military equal ar-15 if he has no reason to ever go full auto and defend a convoy? Is it ok if he buys a simple "cheap" plinker that is never going to be pushed to the max or make the barrel glow?
I'm looking for nothing more than a paper pusher, maybe home defense (I got 6 acres of totally open land, shop at one end and the house in the back corner)
I found a brand called Rocky Point Guns
Rocky Point Guns - Sporting Arms, Handguns, Collector and Military Firearms
Heck, I have a complete Plum Crazy lower I picked up for free, how much am I giving up on a build kit with everything but a striped lower for $450 and tax? Any ideas guys?
Sorry to steal the thread, I would love to see the pics, my friend has a 'nam era colt, for what I know of shooting it, its fun.

On that note, consider an M&P15 Sport. I picked one up at LGS for 599. I love it. They've sold dozens of them.

Although it would be a blast to build one!

You paid exactly what that lower is worth....... In reality, they are not the best lowers to build with. There have been many, many issues with them cracking. It boils down to QC; if the inspector is feeling froggy, then a bunch of lowers get sent out that never should have.
JT185 hits it pretty well. I have had 3 AR's now. The newest was the M&P 15 sport. It does everything right, and is not very expensive. It has what you really want to have on an AR platform; m4 feed ramps, a great barrel, and 5.56 chambering. Everything else is an add on. Dust cover? Not really necessary. I shoot in the desert, and it gets windy here. No problems with dust and junk getting in. Forward assist? In basic training, if they ever caught you bumping rounds into battery, you would strip that rifle and the gunny would inspect it. (He WOULD find dirt and carbon....) You'd get the shaft, maybe run 5 miles to get cleaning gear (He'd NEVER let you use what you had right there- he would say it was inferior and you were a melon head for using it) then you would return, with an IDENTICAL KIT... and proceed to clean every rifle in the class. Man, I will never touch a forward assist so long as I shall live if I can help it.

All the basic parts on the M&P 15 sport are mil spec sizing. Few, very few rifles are truly 'mil spec' with the inspection cards to prove it. What matters is parts interchangeability. And yes, the sport does this. It's accurate, light and eats steel and brass ammo equally well. And at $700 with tax and dros fees, it's a good deal.

Although the S&W is a fine rifle, for a few dollars more you can own a Colt ( a true tier 1 platform).

IMHO, nothing special about a Colt except longevity and owner loyalty. For practical sporting purposes, "better" is a very subjective term and exact dollar/benefit comparisons nearly impossible. Just my opinion. Lots of nice weapons available so get what suits you and you can afford. Zero issues with my S&W but would expect that of the Colt too. For me, Tier one more defines a price point than a need.

A few dollars more than $600...? I'll take the M&P15 Sport. Bet it will do everything most guys are looking for it to do. Spend the extra money for an M&P pistol..
Now that's a great idea, get an M&P pistol!
Regarding the Sport, for me it was either the $600. Sport or no AR. After shooting it for a month or so, I'm totally impressed with the Sport. Great quality and accuracy can be had for 600 bucks. And you're right, it does everything I need it to do.

Welcome to the black gun crowd, and have fun shooting them pigs.. The .223 will kill a hog with no problem, if someone think they won't, they don't shoot well or just don't have a clue. I have seen many hogs kill with the little .22 cal bullet from a .223. And just for the record, the he!! with BETA.

The Colt is a fine rifle but maybe he wants new WITHOUT a few scratches for a couple hundred less?

Someday, someone is going to explain (other than nostalgia for the military or LE use) just what magic process Colt has used to mesmerize their zealots. I have used both (Colt and S&W currently) and the quality is similar for practical purposes. Get into select fire and it might be a different story but that isn't what we are talking here. I give the colt a plus for the 1/7 bbl.
but the 1/8 of the Sport model should perform as well, IMO.:)

Sounds like an excellent deal. I own 2 pre ban Colts, only shoot one as the other is NIB. I will be the first to say it shoots different than my other AR's, very smooth and absolutely flawless operation. I also own a pre-ban Colt AR15-9mm.. what a gun that is... love it. :) Good luck with your sale... are you selling to buy a Sport.. :D

Just came across this thread. So how many pigs have you put down with your new black gun?

If you are going to be close enough to the pigs that you may have to drop your weapon and climb a tree why not use a 3 or 3 1/2 inch twelve gauge with 00 or 000 buckshot? 3 inch 00 buck has 15 pellets, 2 shots will put a lot of lead in a bunch of pigs.

This is what a shotgun will do to pigs.

That shotgun is surprisingly effective. I'll have to check when our helicopter season is around here. :D
Dang pigs are taking over and wreaking havoc. They say they can't hunt them fast enough to keep up with their rate of reproduction. They're not a problem around here yet.
