Are all the J&G 64-6 DAO's ex-Brinks guns?

I collect trade in revolvers, having worked many security jobs in the past and now working in Corrections I have a soft spot for ex- security, police and corrections wheel guns.

I would like to get a Brinks gun, I know I probably seem like a nut because I'm probably one of the only people who cares where it came from but I was curious if all the J&G 64-6's came from a Brinks trade in.

From what I read Brinks ordered a ton of factory DAO 64-6's in 4" and 2", used them for maybe 10 years and then got rid of them.
Not sure what they use now but on another forum people say that if you don't buy your own duty gun they issue you a 10 or 64....I guess most new Brinks guards just buy some kind of auto so they don't need as many 64's...

As a former Brinks employee I can tell you there are still a lot of these revolvers out in the field. They look like the variants Brinks used. Some of them were engraved with the Brinks Shield logo.

There was a forum member that had a line on the Brinks revolvers and offered them for sale here. Most of the Brinks guns are shot twice a year and carried a lot.

Good luck on your quest.

PS-There is gentleman on Gunbroker selling Game Warden trade in model 64 2". I ordered one and it was so nice I ordered a second one. They come with the box and are in excellent condition.

You can call jg and ask if any have the markings. They are usually good with you pickems.

I'd love one with the Brinks shield:)

Great info already on this thread, that's why I love this forum.

I applied for a job with Brinks when I got out of the Army but the drive would have been too far.

I know what it's like to work a lonely security post for low wages, did those jobs for a lot of years both before after my stint in the green machine.

At my CO job we still use 65's loaded with +P.

I just don't have any desire to collect "fancy" or high end guns, I have always loved plain jane service revolvers, lots of fun to collect marked examples and lots of fun to shoot:)

My recent favorite is my Ohio Corrections 64-8, looks like 10 miles of bad road externally but shoots like a match revolver:) probably used for a decade but has 200 rounds through it before it got traded in.

Brinks or not, the used J&G 64s are nice values at < $400 for someone looking for clean shooters. I'd like to pick up a couple as $ permits.

I have an attraction to police, corrections, and security trade in revolvers as well. Picked up an ex Virginia State Police m10 last summer from the early '70s. This is now the house gun for my bride😀. In March, I found a Ruger GP-100 blue 4" half lug .38 at an LGS on consignment from a security company for $275. The VSP gun cost me $299. There are still deals out there if you keep looking and are patient. Waiting for another batch of VA DOC turn in M64s to come in at a local police supply store...

Brinks has its own FFL. The BATFE hates that Brinks has it and makes them jump through hoops. Early on Brinks was changing over to the S&W 4006 double action only handgun. The costs of stainless steel went so high that now Brinks issues the M&P 40. Brinks employees are not allowed to furnish their own guns.

All Brinks revolvers must go back to Smith and Wesson. Smith then sells them to distributors. Brinks branches are supposed to send all revolvers back to the home office in Dallas. New employees are given the M&P only. Since the home office does not give any money to the branches for the revolvers, there is no incentive to send them back. My small branch still has at least 20 model 64's which will stay here.

That is an interesting focus for a collection. I have three .38s that used to belong to the Calif. DMV investigations unit. I bought them through Cake-Davis (long gone) in Sacramento about 30 years ago for, I think, about $150 each retail.

I just bought a J&G Model 64-6 (most likely a Brink's trade in) and let me tell you, it is sweet. Only thing wrong with it was just a tiny bit of surface rust on the hammer, which cleaned up perfectly. The thing shoots NICE, and is a joy to take to the range. It now serves as my primary home defense handgun loaded with FBI load 158 grain LSWCHP +Ps, with a couple speedloaders at the ready.

Speaking of J&G Model 64s, a couple years ago I purchased a NY-1 from them.
Always wondered if it was really from NYPD or if other agencies/firms used the same marked model.

A few years ago, Allied Barton acquired Initial Security (formerly Stanley Smith Security). I know Initial was still using S&W Mod. 64's (not sure on the dash) up until at least 2002. This was their primary issued duty weapon (site/client specific).

I picked up a 2" 64-6 Brinks gun a while back. It is marked like an NY-1. It has the Serial Number on the bottom of the Grip (Normal Location) also on the Left Bottom side of the grip frame, and another in the Yoke.
It came with a Heavy DAO trigger. I did a spring change only, and it is now very nice. I have read that the NY-1 revolvers were slicked up at the factory so that the triggers met the NY spec's. I believe it after just changing the springs.
A set of Pachmayr Compac grips, and a Rocky Hill Leather Pancake, and It was ready to carry.

I have one more improvement I am probably going to make. I will probably have the front sight either cut for a Green Ramp, or removed and a dovetail cut for a Novak 1911 front sight. The SS front sight is not the best to see.

I doubt they are all from Brinks, there are an awful lot of security and corrections agencies that issued Model 64's, and some still do. My company-issued gun is a 64-6, and the action was so smooth I ordered several more over the years. I often wind up selling them to friends or students, and have to order more. You can't have too many 64's!
