Good Morning Folks, Sadly, as I haven't added to my S&W Stable for quite a while now, I sometimes feel the need to simply re-fondle one of current 'House Guns', which is a purpose that I feel this Model is perfectly suited for. As I inspected it the other day, I remembered that I don't think I ever truly determined its origin, as in was a Contract piece, or something else altogether ? IIRC, someone had mentioned it might have been part of an Brink's Contract, later sold by them to a Distributor ? However, upon checking my available Data, it doesn't appear to match with the Brink's Serial # Range, & or the S&W Product Code / Special Order # ? If anyone happens to know the relevant details regarding this particular S&W Model, I would be very appreciative to hear from them. THANK YOU Guys !! [ Please see the relevant data below ]

Best regards, Dom P.

S&W Model 64-5, 4" HB, ROUND BUTT, DAO
SERIAL # BET-15XX
[ K Frame of course. ]
S&W Product # 102505
S&W Special Order # 0013
Matt Finished, Brushed Stainless

P.S.: And even in this era of all manner of 'Fighting Handguns', I personally feel very confident with this Fixed Sight, RB, HB .38 Special+P Revolver. It could of course be due to my having Qualified with a similar Model for many years, it just feels so natural to me.

I have both a 2" and a 4" M-64 NY-1. They're both marked as NY-1's. Yours sounds like my 4".

I've read the history of the NY-1 revolvers long ago and forget whether S&W made any overruns or sold them to other customers and they weren't marked as NY-1's. Could this be the case? My 4" left the country and was imported back in by Century Arms and stamped accordingly.

What about calling S&W to see what info they have?

This 64-4 is NY-1 marked. I kinda figure they were "last gasp" contracts for SW revolvers(mid '80's). Pic is over 15 years old but gun is still in same condition. Joe

Could be a NY-1, right there in the serial # range. Look in the crane area for a NY-1 stamp.
Do you have pics handy?

Later ones had the "vapor honed" finish as in the pic above.^^^

THANK YOU Guys, I appreciate the input. No, mine is not 'NY1' marked anywhere, including the inside Crane area, under the Grips, etc. Yet in all other instances it resembles NY 1 Models. I also determined an inconsistency within the 4th Edition, S&W Collector's Guide, or whatever the actual title is. Under my examples Product Code of # 102505, it notes a Square Butt, whereas mine is Round Butt, which is one reason I purchased it as my POW & an 'Exemplar' for my Department. I thought it would have made a really nice Duty Weapon as opposed to the much more common SQ Models. Naturally though, within a couple of months of my buying it for myself, we officially adopted Sig P-226R / DAK's in .40 S&W !! Of course, now that I put my own cash out we dropped all Revolvers. I don't reget buying it though, as I still feel it's a nice fighting Revolver, even in .38 Special. I have a feeling that this particular Run may have been a relatively smaller production run for customers unknown ? IIRC, I believe I heard here that is might have been Brinks Contract, but I have no firm information to document that fact. Hopefully someone here has come across this particular Product # & Configuration before ?

Best, Dom

This is mine. I've often wondered if it was a Brinks gun. I bought it from a local FFL that happened to be a NY corrections officer. But he knew nothing about its history. Serial is BDN53**

My 64-5 NY-1 4 inch square butt is double action only and has the serial number on the left side of the frame under the cylinder as requested by NYPD. There is an article about these guns in the Model 64 area of the 4th edition. Enjoy

Yup, Your example is 'almost' identical to mine, with the exception of mine has the Round Butt, which is my personal preference. IIRC, mine also is sans the Serial # below Cylinder on Left Frame also. I guess I should go down in the Cellar & take a look just to be certain about the Serial placement though. I've forever lamented my parting my all my 2" M-10's & 64's over the years, but I refuse to pay today's prices for another one, as it's only my Basement weapon. I have sought out 3" Models a few years back, but again the prices are totally unrealistic IMHO. I'm getting older now, & just turned 65 recently so I probably 'honestly' don't need any other Revolvers. But, you can rest assured that I kept my old Stand By's, my Factory Magna-Ported 642LS, my 3" 640, my M19-5 US State Department Contract piece, 4" RB, & A few other S&W Models too. Ooops, I always forget my old, .22/32 H.E., 6" .22 LR 1915 mfg. It's great with CB Caps, or those CCI 'Silent' .22 LR's.

Best, Dom P.

Well, I did mention that I was getting a little older, didn't I. I knew that I had inquired here some years back regarding this particular Revolver's history, & by searching through my Notes, something I probably should have done prior to Posting again about it, I found that yes we had discussed it here. & a fair amount of information was learned about it, THANKS to our more knowledgeable Members. Below is the LINK should anyone wish to review the findings;

Seeking Serial # Ranges For M-64(-5) DAO .38 SPL.

Best regards, Dom P.

P.S.: Please don't take this as I'm not seeking any additional information on this interesting Model 64, for that's definitely not the case !! I always believe that we can never have too much information !!
