As if Harleys weren't annoying enough...

Noise on the gun range. Noise on the race track. Noise from my speakers. I guess I'm a noisy guy. I don't mind Harley noise or their tunes. They don't seem to mind mine. Live and let live.
That is not always a good policy. If you worked third shift and had to sleep during the day, would it be okay if I, as your next door neighbor, was always revving up a loud engine in my driveway or shooting guns in my yard during the day?

Many people today, usually young ones, have one overriding motivation in all they do.
"LOOK AT ME!"
My exhaust is loud.
"LOOK AT MEE!"
My subwoofers will rattle the shingles off your roof.
"LOOK AT MEEE!"
I'm fast. I'm furious.
"LOOOOK AT MEEEE!"
I've got tattoos on my eyeballs and studs in my sphincter.
PLEEESE, LOOK AT MEee, please."

Why not wear ear buds or have Bluetooth in your helmet (if you wear one). Not everyone appreciates your choice in music. Besides, hearing damage is not something to be casual about.
Noise that annoys people around you is not good PR for your chosen hobby or image.

You didn't comprehend what I wrote? You even quoted it.

"when I'm in a populated area, I keep the tunes down."

Va. had a law against such noise that could be heard 25’ or more from vehicle, not sure its still enforced.
Come to think of it very few vehicle laws are enforced. Having lunch with 2 long time buddies that are both retired LEO’s. One I’ve been after for 20 years to write a book which would be a best seller.

Self-defense, most drivers are too busy daydreaming or texting to see us unless they hear us. No music for me except what my springer soft tail with Vance & Hines Longshots makes.

The older I get, the more I love quiet.
This. On long trips I drive a Mercedes SUV, generally considered to be a quiet and refined vehicle. Even so, these days I find that I cannot listen to music when driving. More often than not the road noise from the freeway is such that by the time I get the volume up high enough to hear the music half-properly, the resulting cacophony is too loud. This is hardly a new thing, I've been this way since the early 90s. Maybe it is one of the reasons I have better hearing than most of my peers.

I would rather live next to a waste plutonium trench at Hanford than live on a busy road. Loud and obnoxious is the new norm for far too many...be it motorcycles, pickups, ratty cars, etc. Just another symptom of the degradation of civil society. Post #10 sums it up nicely...we don't care. I can hear a mouse pass wind a mile away...excellent hearing can be a curse.

About 10 years I owned an FLHTCI and the music was played maybe a dozen times. Bought it because I always liked geezer glides even when I wasn’t one. First bagger, FLH, had no radio. Loved that Shovel though.

With the many impaired and inattentive drivers on the road I gladly have gone to 4 wheels and a cage.

I don’t play radios loud in my car either….ok, maybe a favorite Motown tune.

My bikes are pretty stripped down. No radios. But as mentioned occasionally Bluetooth ear buds if I’m riding solo.

OP would have hated my 69 SS 396 4 speed Chevelle with a monster cam, and no real exhaust. Just headers, and those short Thrush glass packs with a flange to bolt to the headers. It honestly rattled the dishes in my moms china cabinet when I pulled in the garage.
The sound is an expected and understandable result when taking a big V-8 engine from something like 200 hp to 400 hp.
But when a HD gains 10 or so hp from it…
And still weighs 850lbs or more…
Then it’s just for the noise.

Yes, many will say “Loud pipes save lives” but most of that noise goes behind you.

I’ve heard people make fun of other riders for “dressing like a traffic cone” while they have the smallest taillights and turn signals possible. That’s fine, but it’s hard to take them serious as an advocate for motorcycle awareness when they also say “Loud pipes save lives”.

I miss the old days when you bought a Harley and only had to replace the mufflers, air cleaner, and rejet the carb to make it sound like a Harley should. On my newer fuel injected bike I had to replace the entire exhaust system, change the backing plate on the air cleaner, and buy a tuner. Cost me over $2K for the "sound" not noise I wanted.

In my truck going down the expressway I'd never hear loud pipes over the off road tire noise, stereo, and the build quality to keep outside noises outside. Loud pipes ain't gonna save anyone these days.

I did upgrade all my lights to LED's and added a couple to the back after following a bike like mine one night. Those 2 little factory tail/brake lights didn't show up at all.
