I just saw on the news that the name Asian Carp was voted out by the MN senate. If it passes the house the new name will be " Invasive carp ".

" Champlin Democrat John Hoffman said on the Senate floor that referring to the fish as "Asian" was hurtful to some people. "

Yup.

From the "I don't have anything better to do" department!

As a proud gun-toting liberal Democrat (?!?) from the "North Star State" I must admit that even I am shaking my head over that one. In the interest of full disclosure it should be noted that the overly "PC" amendment was requested by a group representing our large Asian population, was tacked on to a larger bill funding the DNR's efforts to control this invasive species and received bi-partisan support.

Next up: White American Cheese!

The irony here is that in much of Asia, the carp is regarded as a delicacy. Not so much here in Minnesota. OTOH, I can just hear the jackpine savages howling bloody murder if we should ever get such a thing as "Asian walleye".

As a Scot, I have just about had it with Scotch Tape, Scotts Fertilizer and Scotch Whiskey, well, maybe Scotch Whiskey is ok but the rest of them, so hurtful..

:D:D:D:D:D

Yup.

Referring to them as "Carp" might be hurtful to some of the people who passed this in the MN senate.

I can see that this is going to be more difficult to solve than it first appears.

BTW, having our elected representatives spending their time worrying issues like this is hurtful to me... and I don't even live in MN.

Have seen those jumping fish on TV. No matter what you call them, they do look scary and they are a big problem.
I would prefer a solution to the problem over a name change.

I'm certain that the next thing our MN politcians will need to change the name of is Eurasian Milfoil, an invasive freshwater weed. There must be someone here who feels hurt by a weed with this name.

That's OK-what with the state "everythnig" down here, I can't wait to see them decide on the official state roadkill.
I'm going with Possum.
True story.
Was at a seminar to discuss the ramifications of Padillia v Kentucky in the Public Defender realm (basiclly says that attorney has an obligation to determine immigrant status for all kinds of legal reasons beyond the scope of my post).
Had a bunch of hairy legged northern L-I-B-E-R-A-L-S (we call them the hairy legged harpies) lecturing us and one of the audience asked a question about "illegal aliens" and was roundly chastized by the leader who informed him that the proper term was "undocumented immigrants".
I thoughta bit and responded "Well. I guess that 'wetback' is out too." :D

When I saw those jumping fish, I thought "Here's an opportunity for a new shotgun sport!"

When I saw this thread, that's what I thought it was about...
