Auto Start Stop

Do any new vehicles come without the Auto Start Stop feature? Its acronym fits it well. The car maker websites don’t mention the feature, presumably because they know buyers hate it. I’m starting to think a horse and buggy would be preferable to the vehicles being made today. I know, first world problems. Do clydesdales have Apple and Android Carplay? Or is it Horseplay? Yes, I’m shouting at you, cloud!

Don't know, other than my buddies new 2023 Tacoma don't. I think most of them you can turn off?

Do a little searching there are fixes available that will eliminate that nonsense. try disable auto start stop tool!

I hate it too. At least my work truck has a well labeled and easily accessible button to turn it off. I drive a lot of rentals when I’m traveling for work and with some of them, you have to dig deep in some operating menu to find the shut off. On some I’ve even given up and just endure it for the few days I’m driving the vehicle.

You can’t tell me it’s good for the engine bearings to be started dry frequently like that, and what about the wear and tear on the starter and reduced battery life? Oh, and the replacement batteries aren’t your average Walmart $79.99 grab and go. They are several hundred dollars!

Does it really save that much fuel? I can’t imagine it does, but someone may prove me wrong. My guess is that it helps the manufacturers get a little closer to the federally mandated EPA regulated MPG requirement that increases with each passing year.

My 2022 F250 does not have it. I also have to put a key in ignition to start it. I’m guessing all heavy duty trucks don’t have it.

My F-150 has this little button on the dash that shuts it off. Unfortunately, you need to push it every time you start the vehicle.

I have discovered another work-around. If I apply just enough force on the brake pedal to keep the vehicle from moving, the stop/start function won't kick in. It will kick in if I apply more pressure. This comes in handy when I'm driving in heavy traffic or waiting to make a left turn.

One of many reasons I will avoid buying a new vehicle.
I don’t care that you can turn it off. But, I simply don’t want it and many other forced “options” on my vehicle.
I shouldn’t be forced to pay for features I don’t want or need and that only complicate maintenance.

I just push the Auto-stop disable button out of habit every time I start the car. Some of the pre-2020 Chevys don't have that button. To disable it, put the car shifter all the way down to the manual shift position, then push the shift button until it reaches the highest gear. It'll shift by itself just fine until you have to move the shifter out of that position. PITA.

My 2022 Toyota Tacoma does not have that feature. Thank the good Lord.

I love my 2018 Ram except for a few of the stupid safety features. One is that you cannot back up if a door is open. I'm on construction sites where they're crowded and might have spilled nails on the ground or rebar sticking out and I want to back up and I can't see little things in the camera. I need to open my door to back up and navigate around things or to see when my wheels are at the proper depth launching my boat. Ever try to use the backup camera when your tailgate is down hauling long items? I think the people who design trucks have never used them for hauling anything other than golf clubs.

I've driven any number of rental cars in Europe with the start-stop feature (and standard transmissions) over the years, and it's seamless, barely noticeable. When you come to a stop and shift the gearbox into neutral the engine stops...as soon as your foot touches the clutch pedal it starts.

If it saves fuel and thus lessens the cost of driving, what's the big deal?

Years ago I drove a new at the time 2013 Escape home from the auction. I had to stop for gas,opened the gas door, and cursed the person who stole the gas cap. First time I saw a capless system.The next set of lights I came to a full stop and was amazed how smooth the 4 cylinder engines had become. It wasn't till I looked at the tach on zero I realized it had stop/start. Doesn't bother me..but none of my cars have it.

I think the younger generation is so busy texting and searching their playlist, they don't have a clue what the motor is doing.

Thus, it's here to stay.

I was behind a new >$100K Mercedes in a drive through the other day. It made my skin crawl to hear that exotic motor start and stop every ten-feet.

Guess they were saving fuel. Why does a chick that can afford a $100K car even give a care about fuel cost?

According to a service manager I know that BS nuisance saves about as much gas in a year as will fit in a small coffee cup.

Got to rate this right up with the almost impossible to use new style fuel cans

For GM vehicles (can't speak for other brands) there are 2 batteries, one is the standard 12V car battery, the other is a small secondary battery that is charged (automatically) to a higher voltage to facilitate the quick restart. The charging system has 2 separate circuits.

Hmmmm I’ve never heard this. I know it can’t save much fuel. I wonder how much it adds to cost of vehicle and how much wear it places on starter, alternator and battery. I never heard of this second battery. I also found out that a new battery in some vehicles has to be “programmed” to the vehicle. This allows computer to read battery and not shut off motor if there’s not enough juice to restart it. This is a lot of technology people are forced to pay for. I think it stinks

The Environmental Protection Agency offers incentives to manufacturers who force their auto stop/start systems to switch back on. If the system is “nonlatching” — in other words, it doesn’t stay off after you switch off the car — the EPA only calculates fuel economy figures when the system is engaged. If they allow the system to be permanently defeated, then they test fuel economy with the system on and off. After that, the EPA averages the two fuel economy figures. Since that number will always be lower than it will with the system engaged, manufacturers switch it back on when you start the car again.

I have a new Hybrid Toyota Highlander and am not sure if it has that feature or not. Haven't really paid attention as it's very quite anyway. I don't understand the irritation over such a feature unless it's just an excuse to bellyache about new things. But then I watch films for enjoyment, rather than to spot gun errors.
