By pure accident, I found this information from the Baltimore Police Museum. Quite a bit on Smith & Wesson revolvers. I found it very interesting and somewhat amusing. Enjoy!

I had to google the word espantoon and the first picture that came up was a Baltimore Espantoon.

The first part of the article makes Baltimore today seem like a really peaceful, pleasant place to live.

And, in spite of all the mis-spelling the word is espOntoon, with an "O", not A. Look it up!

Just a fancy name for a "billie club" aka "night stick", that was common police issue until the Monadnock Prosecutor was introduced in the 1970s.
