I have a very nice No. 5 and have killed several deer with it. I have never found the recoil that objectionable.

Recoil is subjective, but I agree that I never found a No. 5 to be uncomfortable to shoot. I often read people saying how the M44 Mosins kick terribly, but never found them bad at all.
