Broward County School Shooting

FBI says it failed to investigate tip on Florida suspect

"PARKLAND, Fla. (AP) — The FBI received a tip last month that the suspect in the Florida school shooting had a "desire to kill" and access to guns and could be plotting an attack, but agents failed to investigate, the agency said Friday. Florida Gov. Rick Scott called for the FBI director to resign because of the agency's failure.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions said the shooting that killed 17 people Wednesday was a "tragic consequence" of the FBI's missteps and ordered a review of the Justice Department's processes. He said it's now clear that the nation's premier law enforcement agency missed warning signs.
In more evidence that there had been signs of trouble with suspect Nikolas Cruz, Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said at a Friday news conference that his office had received more than 20 calls about him in the past few years.
A person who was close to Cruz called the FBI's tip line on Jan. 5 and provided information about Cruz's weapons and his erratic behavior, including his disturbing social media posts. The caller was concerned that Cruz could attack a school."

Disappointed and saddened by the latest.

Of course the newspaper is nothing but "news" of this today.

It's the FBIs fault
The Media (games TV Movies) fault

The current laws fault
The local Sheriffs fault

The high capacity "assault" weapons fault
Lack of mental health support fault
etc etc.

The jerk is pleading guilty to avoid the death sentence.

Read this article by this "knowledgeable" writer in USA today and see if you find any errors?

What Florida law says about gun ownership

The jerk is pleading guilty to avoid the death sentence.

Why don't we stick to the facts here, even if the media does not.

Nikolas Cruz confessed to the crimes but has not entered a plea yet. His attorneys have stated for the record that his guilt is not an issue. Punishment is the issue.

There isn't much doubt that a plea will be entered, but it's also up to the prosecutor(s) at the Broward State Attorney's Office whether or not to accept any plea entered on Cruz's behalf.

Quoting from the Sun-Sentinel of Broward County:

"Prosecutor Shari Tate, head of the homicide unit at the Broward State Attorney's Office, said it was too soon late Friday to discuss the appropriate penalty."

The prosecutor can seek the death penalty, of course, but cannot impose it. Whatever sentence is handed down is recommended by the jury during the penalty phase of a trial, and imposed by the judge if it goes to trial. And right now, it's still a big "if" as to whether it'll even go to trial.

And even if it does go to trial, it could be a year or two before that even happens.

If the prosecutor accepts the plea, there will be no trial (which would probably be a good thing), and a sentence of life without the possibility of parole will likely be imposed by a judge.

why is this still being debated...

Because no matter what our gut might tell us would be a just punishment, we're still a nation of laws.

Any sort of "debate" is totally pointless, anyway. Whatever happens to Nikolas Cruz in the end won't be decided by any sort of public debate on Internet forums, protesters' soapboxes, social media, barrooms, American Legion halls, or any other place outside the legal system.

Here in Florida for some stupid reason they feel a SRO is not needed at Elementary School? Only middle and High Schools?

I know several retired LEOS and the consensuses among them, is that there are so many retired LEOS in Florida that many of them would be glad to volunteer to take short shifts as SRO.

But Nooo the Schools will not allow it? Liability insurance and all that stuff.

BUT, it is pretty sad that these days we need to worry about school building design and having security to guard against mentally ill, crazy people!

Where does it end, movie theaters, Malls, Concerts ,Sporting events??
After Newtown trained volunteers came out of the wood work to patrol schools for no charge. I believe most were turned down.

I am thinking it is time to put federal troops in there if the states are not willing to protect the children.

If recent experience out here in the SW is any guide, the Broward DA won't bother to ask for the death penalty.

This Arizona DA had two, slam dunk cases. But the rules on proper representation are such that the public was paying for the defense. Given the tax base in many jurisdictions, the death penalty is being priced out of existence.

The information I have is that there was a armed School Resource Officer on duty at the school. Also the school is a very large campus. By the time the Officer was altered and arrived the shooting had taken place.

This.

And the reality about retired LEOs, etc. volunteering their
time, days and years can pass without incident and being
a volunteer sitting around a school will get old fast.

Thank You Sargent Friday for calling to our attention my poorly worded sentence!

I should have used quotes from the news. Should have said LOOKING to PLEAD

Florida school shooting suspect Nikolas Cruz willing to plead guilty for life sentence, public defender says - NBC News

PARKLAND, Fla. — Accused school-massacre gunman Nikolas Cruz is looking to plead guilty in exchange for a sentence of life without parole, his state-appointed defense attorney said Friday.
Broward Public Defender Howard Finkelstein confirmed to NBC News that Cruz's attorneys plan to discuss a guilty plea with prosecutors and they are "willing to plead guilty to life without parole."

It is so much clearer now.

This thread title should be changed. Broward county School mass-murder is more appropriate.

Any reference to the killer should be as that: killer. Murderer, terrorist, etc. may also be used accurately.

The FBI should not be the nation's baby sitter. Or Thought Police.
I would like to know if the accused was taking any sort of drugs-illicit or legal. It seems these so called "medications"-i.e. psycotropic drugs-far from beiong magic potions that "cure" people or "help" them overcome mental problems
are like Dr. Jekyll's concoctions.
