Bullet Button Mag Release replacement

I just picked up a S&W Sporter and it has the Bullet Button Mag Release. I was wondering if this can be replaced with the regular release. Thanks in advance for your replies. I don't live in a State that requires it.

Well, I know you can switch from a regular mag release to a "bullet button" so the reverse should be true too.

When I get my compliant, I'm probably ordering and installing different type of lock that can be switched back n' forth from lock to free-release. Makes it easier if I end up moving to AZ or just visiting out of state.

you know i could be wrong but these bullet buttons are on there for a reason. if your state doesnt require them then i dont think your dealer would sell them. you better double check to make sure that your state does not require them or you guys could be committing a major felony by removing these bullet buttons. there are other options like the magnet mag release buttons and another one that screws in some how so you can put it on and remove it at will.

My state doesn't require it. I bought this off an individual, not a dealer. It's kinda of my fault, I didn't check it out. I figured it was new in the box and that they were all the same. This is probably why the price was so cheap. I have checked and there is no problem legally. I live in Illinois.

Yep, I think its a Kalifornia thing. Too stupid for almost anywhere else.

Not meant to insult you personally but the rule is pretty rediculous, don't you agree? Ten round mags, fixed mags and stocks, draconian laws for carry permits and on and on.

Not exactly Second Amendment friendly, IMHO.

Actually I think mine is set up for Mass. or I think NJ. My adjustable stock functions. In CA I believe the adjustable stock is pinned extended. Another weird CA thing.But believe me Illinois isn't much better.

Nah, your probably thinking of NY. Adjustable stocks are a-ok. If you have "evil" features(adjustable stock, pistol grip, vertical grip, flash supressor and grenade launcher thing/I think bayonet) it has to have a bullet button to keep the magazine from dropping freely. Some peeps will make theirs "featureless" then they can use the mag. drop freely and even use legally obtained normal capacity magazines.

i didnt take it personal, no harm no foul, and its not just your opinion its all of our (CA. gun owners) opinions that its ridiculous. the 10 round mags are horrible, the stocks can be adjustable, and as far as carry permits the only people i know with them are LEO and CO's.

Well, I called Smith & Wesson and they're sending me the parts I need to convert to the regular mag release. AT NO CHARGE !!!! Now thats great customer service. Only down side is 4-6 weeks to get them, but I can live with that. Thanks guys for the replies.

hey i need instruction on how to remove the mag release button on an M&P 15 sport. it doesnt dissessamble like a normal ar, and i want to put a different button with a different bullet button in it. i need help desperatly nothing is seeming to work. its starting to seem like the mag release is not meant to b removed, but that doesnt seem right.

It can be replaced with a standard mag release. I live in CA, but travel back home to Detroit from time to time and bring my firearms with me so I can go shooting with my friends.

I contacted S&W to ask them if they sold the standard mag release kit. To my surprise they sent me a standard mag release button, spring and catch lever for FREE! Now that's what I call customer service!

Now removing the bullet button is a whole other ordeal, which I'm not looking forward to. Hopefully after I apply heat to it with a soldering iron to loosen up the Loktite, I'll be able to just push in the bullet button and back out the catch lever. We shall see!

I live in CA and own a CA compliant M&P15 Sport. It has an adjustable 6 position butt-stock, flash hider and pistol grip. The only difference between my rifle and a non-CA compliant M&P15 Sport or any other AR is, mine has a bullet button and can only have 10 round mags. This is what I use for quicker mag changes (Some will argue that use of this tool in CA constitutes a felony. As far as I'm concerned, as long as my hand never leaves to tool and the tool does not stay attached to my rifle after depressing the mag release, it is perfectly legal. Although, I am not a lawyer.).:

Nope, my CommieFornia compliant sport stock is the standard adjustable that comes with it.

Do you realize that you bumped a 3 yr old thread? I'm guessing that if the OP hadn't figured out how to replace the bullet button with a standard release by now, he has probably given up on the project.
