Buying tires online

Tire Rack works for me. They have a list of dealers who will receive the tires and install them. Local Firestone turned out to be the one here, they did a great, careful job installing four Continentals for a reasonable price.

I shop Tire Rack and then go to Discount Tire. They will usually match the Tire Rack price.

My experience is that Discount Tire is even less expensive than TireRack.

But you can only safe if you know a guy who can mount them for a good price. Some shops charge extra if you bring your own parts...

I have wondered about buying them online. How do the tire places like it when you bring in tires you bought elsewhere? I would think they would charge you a lot to install them?

Here I bought these someplace else can you put them on?

Well I can guarantee you would be in for sticker shock if you tried that with the major tyre shops in Las Vegas. They like their monopolies too much to let you do that too often. Maybe I could get a garage to do it cheaper but the car trade is one big cartel in this area.

Shipping eats you up....plus the cost of mounting and balancing....don't save any money. I choose to buy local.

I had to buy a set of tires for my wifes car this spring. My shop neighbor is a gas/ repair station, high tech modern not grease monkey type place. I gave him the sizes and asked him to get me prices. A few day later he tells me that no one has these sizes in stock unless I want run flats, I didnt. He gives me a print out from tire rack and tells me to buy them from them as they have a choice of brands in stock. So I pick the OE tires have shipped to my house. The gas station guy mounts and balances them, done, easy.

The gas station guy tells me that tire rack has tremendous warehouses full of inventory. He does not want to be on their installer list for several reasons.

Was a positive transaction.

If you don't like the limited offering in the Sam's Club store they have an extensive inventory online, shipping is free to the store and the installation is Sam's normal rate of about $10 per tire w/ new valve stems and lifetime balance. You've got somewhere to go if you need warranty but be aware that WalMart does not honor Sam's Club tire warranties.

Ask around for used tires. Deals can be had there...

The expedition i bought last year the guy had put used michelins on to sell it -$80 for 4 installed, a steal and a half even if they are load range e beasts. Michelins wear forever and are a great deal if you're able to pony up the premium price up front (often $50/tire more).
They are low on tread and barely pass state inspection, but work well in the rain/snow even with low tread.

I looked all over for new tires and am put off by the price - $750ish is the cheapest I've found a set of 4. For our 'extra' car (used to pull our camper, might put 3k miles a year on it) putting out that kind of money is painful.

I've looked at tire rack but can get local dealers to get so close to their price and I don't have to haul the tires around to make it happen.

I've also found local gun dealers to be about as cheap as buying online, add shipping and transfer fees that I'd rather spend the $20 more and support the local guy.

When I took a set from Tire Rack to the local tire guy for mount and balance He spouted off with "I could got them cheaper and faster for ya". I saw the other guy in the shop melt into his chair. You see the week before I went to them to buy the tires. The other guy was the person I talked to. He said they had no source for competition tires and if I ordered them from Tire Rack he was on their installer list bring them in and he would install them cheaper than anyone else in town.

I buy local when I can. If not Tire Rack.

I did my research on tirerack.com, then bought locally. The difference in total price was only about $20 total, so I supported the local tire guy. If you do order them online, most of the online dealers have a local shop to which they ship that will install them.

I would rather buy tires that are Made in the USA. Is it possible to do that if I bought on line?

I usually go to Discount, which is real close.
But last go around, I also considered tire rack, and they
have links to installers.
But.. at the end of the day, a local mom and pop outfit that
specializes in those big fancy wheels ended up beating both
tire rack and discount. I think the price was about $84 bucks
cheaper than discount for a set. I wanted the same OEM tire
that came with the car because it is low rolling resistance.
So they had to order them, but got them the next morning.
I eyeballed the install to make sure they used a torch wrench
and not an impact wrench to snug up the lug nuts.
Don't warped brake rotors.
BTW, I checked that place just out of the blue driving by it,
and it paid off. He gave me a dang good price.

I have tried many places as said above like discount tires locally but lately i have been buying my tire needs online and so far the lowest price tires on major brand tires is at Simpletire.com. Has anyone else purchase from this site?
