I sent in an application for a C&R license. Last month the fees were taken out of my bank account. How long does it usually take to receive the license?

It varies. It took them over eighty days to process my renewal after charging my account. When I got my original license three years ago, it took 18 days mailbox to mailbox.

2-3 months is pretty much standard. That's approx. how long it took for mine too.

Mine took about 80 days initially, and about 30 days for renewal. I'm not sure if it makes a difference, but the licensing group is supposedly down the road from me.

Misty, I'm in the same boat -- just sent in my app a few days ago. They charged my card immediately. I kind of expected that I was in for a 10-week wait at best. For your sake and mine I hope they can do it faster.

I'm also waiting on a California document called a COE, or certificate of eligibility. Having this eases some of the constraints on ordinary gun purchases in this state -- there's no waiting period with a COE, for example, and no one-gun-per-month restriction.

So I'm hurrying up and waiting.

A friend of mine just received his FFL03 and CA COE, both were less than four weeks, mailbox to mailbox.

My C&R took right at three weeks from submission to receipt of the license. Shortly after submitting for the license I applied for the CA COE (Certificate of Eligibility) and received that within 2 weeks. I feel like I was on a little lucky streak because a lot of folks have waited several month to receiver either the C&R or COE.

For those who wonder what a COE is, it is a semi-permanent background check. When you apply you answer most of the same questions on the 4473 plus submit a set of fingerprints and the State certifies that your are good to go. Unfortunately the COE is only valid for one year but renewal is a piece of cake. I receive my renewal for about a month before expiration, get it turned around with a $22 check and my new certificate is in my hands before the old one expires.

Update

Well, to my astonishment the California COE that I mentioned in my post above showed up in mailbox today -- 13 days after I mailed the check and application. The date on the Certificate and the timing of my original mailing means the DOJ handled it in less than five business days. I am actually kind of stunned.

Now to see what the timing will be on the C&R.

Misty, The av. time is about 90 days with processing. Word of advise make sure you keep up with the paperwork they send you. My advise is to contact your local ATF branch in your state and let them show you how they want the paper work completed in your log book this way if you are ever checked on they will not have a cow and fine you for incorrect documentation.

Here in NC I have a few friends that are ATF that showed me so I got lucky. Most ATF agents are pretty good guys. They will help you and not make you feel stupid.

I used to be a federal agent my self and I know the feds like things done a certain way. THERE WAY... hope this helps. Good luck with your C&R Misty.

Mine was three weeks to the day, mailbox to mailbox last spring. A coworker sent in for his application a month ago and still has not gotten that.

Mine has been one month to the day since the fees were taken from my bank account. Still no license. Guess all I can do is hurry up and wait.
