So I finally got my grip that I ordered from Amazon and when I went to install it I noticed that it didn't have the small indent for the takedown spring. So I figured well maybe it'll still hold it down. Well as I started to screw the grip down the spring started to bend so I stopped and removed the grip. So question is, is this a defective unit that they forgot to drill the indent for the takedown pin spring? Should I return it or drill out the indent myself? I put the old grip back on after trying to bend the spring back straight as best as I could and the takedown pin still works but I think I'm going to need a new one.

I wonder if the hole is deep enough to tap for a short set-screw to hold a cut spring? It's been a long time since my grip was off.

The tension on the rear take-down pin could be adjusted to whatever you wanted that way.

What I would do is clip the spring, but do not cut it flush with the lower. Leave it a little bit longer, 1/16 - 1/18, so that way the spring will still apply tension to the detent.

I replaced the grip on mine with a standard Hogue grip without issue. You don't need the indent, you simply need to fit the grip on carefully. Works just fine and many have done it.

I put a left over grip from my AR onto the 15-22, noticed the same thing, I just drilled a hole in the grip for the spring (matched the depth of the one that came off the 15-22) if I ever decide to put it back on a AR, the extra hole won't make any difference. (it's a very shallow hole, unlike the selector spring one)

Thanks for all the input. I was thinking of doing this with my dremel. You're right that it doesn't need to be that deep. Either that or may cut the spring as suggested.

I used a small wood drill but in my dremel and it worked perfectly I only drilled like a mil or two deep. However to get the CAA UPG-16 grip to fit I needed to put two or three washers on the bolt. It would not grip tightly before seating fully.

The standard star washer would not fit inside the grip and the hole was too close to the same size as the bolt.

Oh ****, I have to get washers too? I'll have to take a look at that, didn't notice. Also, I think I noticed that there was going to be a gap on the rear tail of the grip where it meets the lower. One reviewer said he put it in his 15-22 and there was no gap. Does yours have a gap?

There is no need to cut the spring. A 1/8" deep hole is all you need in the grip. That's enough to hold the spring. the rest of the spring fits nicely into the lower.

So much work... just get a Hogue or get whatever is the right grip for the 15-22... makes life alot simpler...:D

1.25 for washers and a dremel was all that was needed. Only seemed like a hassle cuz it took 6 days to get here and didn't know about the missing indent and bigger hole for the bolt. Made it to homedepot right before closing.

Yeah I also just used bulk washers from a home depot. There is a gap but it is minute and you won't notice it. It isn't like the Magpul gap, it is around a millimetre big. I did not notice the selector spring gap being big. It ran like a champ the next range trip.

Yep, I can live with it. Thanks for letting me know about the washers. I didn't even realize the bigger hole. Might have come off next range day. Haha. It looks and feels so much better then the stock grip.

Personally because my bolts are all metric yet the 15-22 uses imperial bolts. I also did not know the bolt head was smaller than the hole in the grip before I started the work. Any new bolt will need to be shorter and have a bigger head, or you can throw on two small washers and not worry about it.

I only needed one washer and it tightened up fine for me. I tried 3 at first with the star washer added and it looked like the bolt was going to be too short so I kept it at one.
