I get a call from customer support, guy said they have my shield, .40 cal, and what was wrong with it. I told him the mag drop issue with the 7 round mag loaded with SD rounds. He said, sir you forgot to send your magazines. I said, oops. He told me no problem, they will send me 2 new mags with the fix, and send me a free shipping label to send my 2 mags to them, and they will fix them for me too. Guy was very nice, and I am very happy with customer support.

Glad for ya. That's why Smith is my favorite. Its good to know that troubles are few and far between, and if I do draw a lemon the will make it right.

This, of course, begs the questions of (1) What exactly was wrong, (2) What is being done to fix the pistol; and, (3) What is being done to fix the magazines?

Yeah... When you get them back, before sending the original mags back, it would be great if you could do a close comparison of the old vs new mags. It'd be interesting to hear what the differences are.
Have they modified the mag notches, so they ride different?
Did they modify/shorten the mag Follower legs, so there's not as much tension with a full mag?
Did they modify the mag release itself as well?
etc.

2 free mags!

Wish I had FORGOT to include my mags:) I received my .40 Shield back yesterday with two new mags (with the bump on the catch slot) and they kept the old ones. That is all they said they did to fix it. I will be shooting it tomorrow to see if it did.

S&W needs to put out a notice to inform people how to tell the updated mags from the "problematic" mags. That way people using the 40 shield for self defense will know the difference rather than waiting to see if the problem effects their gun. Then, I will be impressed with S&W customer service.

Thats not a bad point, but wait for what? If you carry a firearm without shooting & practicing with it you are putting yourself and others in danger far more than a S&W mag.

The white dot in my Shield's front sight looked like most of the paint fell out so I emailed S&W Support about it. They wrote back and offered three options: 1-Send the gun to them, 2-Mail me a new sight, or 3-Clean and paint it myself. I replied to send me a new sight so they did. I love how effortless it was and I won't be without my gun. Glad to know others are getting good support too.

I agree with CrossRifles2008!

I agree with CrossRifles2008! I will not carry a gun that I have not shot at least 250+ rounds through to break it in as well as to get comfortable with it. That is why I am still carrying my Kahr PM9 until I am sure my .40 Shield is good to go.

I would love to see a comparison picture of old to new magazines.

The 7 round mag dropped with SD rounds, due to increased pressure and the mag catch is slightly rounded. the fix as I understand it is they push out the metal on the mag catch so there is a more positive hold. I'll take pics and post them, fed ex was here today, and I missed them by 20 minutes, so I have to run down and pick my gun up tonight.

Put 200 rounds through it at the range today (Federal FMJ, HST and Gold Dot short barrel) and had already put 100 rounds through it before sending back to S&W. On first mag had slide lock open once, but worked flawlessly after that:). Looks like I have a new daily carry gun!

picked up my shield at fed ex 6pm. went right to the indoor range about minutes away. used hornady critical defense, zombie max, some random hollow point lying in my dresser drawer, and a few pdx1. all ammo went boom, mag did not drop, flawless. Just a dream to shoot now. i got some pics of me wearing it with my crossbreed but i gotta figure out how to post pics first. I have to say, it is a very comfortable to wear and live with gun, and i'm lucky that I went and got my ccw and this just came out. us new carry folks got it easy now right? lol
