That was standard fare along with canned chili in cow and sheep camps back when I was kid.
We kept cases of it on hand in the cellar with all of the other canned food stuffs it took to feed all of us for the weeks or months between trips to town for supplies.

I never tasted good Mexican food until I left the ranch for college.
What an enlightening experience real fresh made enchiladas and salsa were.

For that matter, a medium rare steak blew my mind. Before that the only steak I had eaten was home raised crippled critters we butchered ourselves and were fried hot fast on a wood stove.

A juicy tender steak not tough enough to use to half sole a boot was an entirely new concept to me.

Yup, them was the days.

Ring this up to "Well it seemed like a good idea at the time."

I've got too many of those that I'd sure like to forget.

OH GOD, I got a can on the pantry shelf. Based on this thread, I think I will use them to demonstrate the destructive power of a .44 Mag! I've grown too old to enjoy the " Macho Calibers" but, I would kill for a "Claymore". On second thought, if I ate them, it would probably be like a "Claymore in the "can". Come on Preparation H ! I better let this end right here! Nick

"Ring of Fire" when the old man reaches for the Preparation H and uses Bengay instead. My wife actually likes canned tamales. I have a salad instead.

I'm swimming up stream on this but I kinda like them! The trick, of course, is that you cannot consider them tamales. It's like the frozen burritos you buy in the 8 packs (or 39 cents each). I thaw those, zap in the microwave and fry crisp. Some Habanero salsa and it's not a bad bachelor dinner when the wife is gone.

The VERY best frozen tamales are XLNT brand. But only found in SoCal.

I happy to say I've never tried canned tamales and never will. Wish I could find some good frozen ones but no luck. Will have to wait for Arizona trip in January and get the real thing.

But I do like fruitcake, my own homemade that is. Good reminder to get the ingredients to make it for the holidays.

Totally agree with you. Tried Hormel brand one time and will never make that mistake again.

That was the brand. I still have 1-2 cans of Hormel stew--but not sure if I can stomach eating it. Dinty Moore isnt much better. I saw a stray Shepard dog in my neighborhood this morning, I think ill se if he will eat whatI have left?

LOL, I would NEVER eat a tamale from a can...unless I had the blind raving munchies!

That was part of it--I hadnt eaten a thing all day and been on the go since about 7am. It was 9pm when i was at the store--and even dog food looked good.

I don't believe what I'm hearing. Not only did you eat canned tamales, you washed it down with fruitcake.
Will be standing by for an input from the lawyers, but I think the Supreme Court has ruled against that combination.
If you need some tamales, look in the freezer case. One good brand is the Albuquerque Brand- Bueno. They are a local family owned company and they make a wide range of excellent products.
Their chili powder is one of the best in the West, so I think it'll hold up back East.
You can probably get them in a lot of places in a number of states.
Green Chile, New Mexico chile, Hatch, New Mexican food, Bueno Foods

Heh heh,I did learn that lesson. Oh and, the fruitcake was all I had on hand for favor change. The tummy suffered that night-thats for sure. Ive not heard of that brand? but will look for it since imat WM now. Usually, I get my tamales from Grandmas Tamales--which is only 1 miles from where I live. If they are aready sold out?I get them from HEBS--which is about 3/4 amile from my place. HEB were sold out except for bean tamales-and I didnt want bean. In hind sight--I SHOULD have bought them anyway.

The next time you're desperate, try some frozen burritos with a mess of melted cheese. My kids are horrified at the idea [emoji1]

Heh heh, been there and done that. I livedon frozen burritos, corndogs and tater tots when I was in College. Oh and-cheap pizza too from CICIs Pizza.

Canned tamales are pretty grim: they will probably sustain life but not by much.

Sometimes missing a meal isn't so bad. Especially given the alternative.

Ill eat bread soaked in drano--beforeI try those tamales again. :)

What? Was the 7-11 all out of burritos kid?:eek::rolleyes::D:)

I tried those oncet a long time ago--never again--even if I have not eaten ina week. Last time i had those--well, I didnt see outside the house much that day.

HEB? I say - Why would you name your grocery store HEB?
Answer- You might if your last name was Butt.

If I recall?HEB is for: Harold Edward Butts. They got their start here in Texas. We had both an HEB and Kroger in those days. I liked Krogers much better--but they were across town--HEBs was 7 blocks away.

Canned Tamales and fruitcake???

As Jeff Foxworthy says in his bit about preparing for his first Colonoscopy.... "the first volley lifted me off of the seat".

Me thinks that combination would have similar results... talk about your "worm poop"

I'm skipping lunch today....

Heh heh, nailed it. Sad thing is--is I had eggs bt--was to tired and azy to fry up two of them.

I'm not a picky eater. I don't think I've ever tried the canned kind, and doubt I ever will. I don't even care for the real ones, and I live in the land of people going door to door, business to business hawking home made tamales.
Just never have cared for them.

I'm amazed a man of your age and so well traveled would stoop to such a thing. I don't feel sorry for you. Would like some of the fruit cake however.
I PM'Ed you my mailing address.
Thanks

Heh heh,ive never had Wiernerschnitzel in a can yet--and I saw that when I was in Konstanz Germany.:eek:The fruitcake actually was pretty good.Had cranberries, raisens, nuts, cherries and I forget what else? However, the size cake I got was a 3 servings cake.I had enough to ast me at least another 10 years.

Two items, that for years, I have said I would never buy are canned tamales and canned potatoes. I have a friend whose mother would serve canned tamales, and to this day, he won't even look at good tamales. Potatoes, c'mon man. Frozen, maybe so, canned never.

Heh heh, I learned my lesson. Also, anyone want a free can of tamales to use for target practice?Just pay the S&H an its yours...

I don't even know what a tamale is, and now I know better than to try one if ever offered one. But then again, people that never had hog maw don't know what they're missing. Or, monkey meat on a stick, yum yum.

Man, man, man, Ringo I can't believe you fell for the old canned tamales trick. Then of all things you followed it up with fruitcake. Sounds to me like you were on the path of stomach destruction if I was guessing.:) Oh, I believe you said it was not kind to your stomach and I can see why with all that and then "fruitcake" on top of it. Have a good Thanksgiving.

Heh heh,it was the ultimate test but--a lesson learned too.Happy Thanksgiving to you as well.Also--ill make sure itsnot canned-when I eat Turkey. :-))

I learned that lesson many years ago. We love tamales with taco salad and I was unable to find any fresh so I though how bad can the canned version be, after all they ARE still tamales right?

WRONG!!!

Since then when I can't get fresh I have Chinese food and do the Mexican food later.....

I remember about 10 years back there was an old green panel truck that would park on the side of HWY 225 in front of the Shell Plant. It was an elderly Mexican couple that was selling the tamales they made at home. I was reluctant to get them for obvious reasons. One night I was on Graveyards and I was desperate for some fresh tamales so I decide to take a chance. They were FAAAAABULOUS!!! Best I ever had even in Mexico. They made chicken and beef and you could get either in regular or spicy.

I got up the next day I went by there and bought all they had of every kind and put 'em in the freezer. Buy the time I used 'em up (which wasn't very long) they weren't there any more. I never saw them again. Sigh............ :(

Heh heh, we had canned chinese food too--only when I was younger--we had no chinese restaurants in town at the time. Now--they are like Circle Ks (Stripes) and are aplenty.

BTW--HEBs does make great tamales. Pork, Chicken,Beef and Bean. All aregood but bean is my least fave.

Was the store all out of Chef Boyardee Beef Raviolis? This time of year, I miss living on the border and getting those homemade tamales made from venison and or pork. When my wife and her friend didn't feel like making them, we'd buy them for a buck a dozen. They heat up in the microwave just fine.

Not sure if they were outof those but--Im not much of a canned pasta fan--too processed.

Dang, Ringo! I'm slightly nauseous just reading your description. Glad you pulled through! They say that moistening the toilet paper slightly relieves some of the irritation to the, ah, affected areas from overuse.

Heh heh,not much prob therre--I ate some Jalepeno poppers the next day--fixe me up.:)

Where do you find fresh made tamales today??

I used to get them all the time when I was a kid in Missouri...a man walked the streets with a hand cart selling "hot tamales"....

I found a woman in SoCal about 10 years ago who delivered to a car place!

Used to have a neighbor in Santa Clara who was always bringing over a big platter of various flavors of home made tamales....hmmm hmmm good.

Dang, now I'm hungry................

If you have an HEBs anywhere near you?they sell themb the dozen--for about $5-$6 bucks. If I could ship you some?you'd like those well enough.

Next time just get the fresh made bean ones then. I've personally never have had bean tamales, and am always surprised to hear the different varieties. I do not like sweet tamales. Anyways, I also have personally never seen canned tamales myself, but I am not surprised.

ElPaso should have an HEBs there-try theirs--not great but not bad.I like the beef nes the best/

Totally agree with you. Tried Hormel brand one time and will never make that mistake again.
Other than corned beef hash, Hormel ANYTHING is vile.

Giant Eagle has stopped carrying Wolf Chili with beans, and doesn't have much of the no beans stuff, which I won't eat.

Most of what they have is Hormel, which is 100% pure grease. I wouldn't lube the roadwheels of an M113 with that swill.

I can see you have never tasted C-rations if you had you would know better then to eat canned anything.

Heh heh, thats another thing imintensly listening toyou Vets on is talk about c-rations.I thought about trying new made c-rats--but-think illpasson them.I wanted to see what you all had to endure--but i dont think my stoach is up to possible torture? :D

If I recall?HEB is for: Harold Edward Butts. They got their start here in Texas. We had both an HEB and Kroger in those days. I liked Krogers much better--but they were across town--HEBs was 7 blocks away.

Gee, I'm glad I didn't grow up with a name like Harry Butts.
One of the better emergency bachelor eats I know of is canned biscuits. A little butter, a little jelly, you're good. For a deluxe snack spread deviled ham on the biscuits before cooking, then in the last minute, put a piece of cheese on top of each. Bon appetit!
