Case for AR-15

O.k. guys, need advice. What is a good bag/case to carry the AR from home to gun range? I've been looking at the Drago but hear the Condor and Voodoo's are good too.

Suggestions? Not looking for a hard case unless someone feels that would be better than a soft side case. If so please explain why.

It kinda depends upon what you want to carry besides the rifle and what degree of protection you want. Also if you want/need to be discreet. Guitar cases might work for discreet.

Many of the lower priced bags are rather lacking in protective padding. This may be of more importance if you have optical sights. I don't believe in product testing even military spec optics for impact.

Decades ago, I bought a couple of Assault Systems bags. They're very well padded, somewhat rain resistant and have pouches for mags & cleaning gear plus some small tools. I can pre-load it with everything I need for a range trip except ear protectors.

Given inflation, for less money I was recently able to buy a Star-Lite hard case. Check their website, they have sales and specials. Yeah, you have to custom cut the foam (or not) but you could run the case over with a truck and not hurt the contents.

Well you certainly cannot beat the price! Please let us know how it performs real time.

I ordered this case for my new Fieldline Pro 42" Gun Case with Roe Sling Pack http://www.walmart.com/ip/32106304 it seems like best bang for my bucks.

This case worked and looked great, and the Sling Pack made a perfect range bag. I was able to fit my glasses, ear muffs, cleaning kit and 300 rds of ammo easily in it. The gun case is long enough to store my Sport II with the stock extended, and you can store 4 to 8 mags if you double up. I will have to see how it holds up, it seems to be constructed pretty decent for the price. It is my first AR and case so don't really have anything to compare to.

Follow up on this post. I ended up ordering the Drago Gear XT Double gun 36" case in black. Academy had them on sale for $69.99. I don't have it yet but once I do I will give my opinion on it.

I like the Boyt Tactical case. It's well made and padded, and it doesn't scream "Rifle".

My NC Star double carbine case arrived today from Amazon. So far, pleased. Made in China unfortunately but for the price, hard to beat. I'll have to report back on how it holds up. It was $50, free shipping (i'm not a Prime member) and no tax so a good buy. I plan to haul one AR and a 10/22 in it so weight won't be a huge factor.

Just a note to bag shoppers. If you own or plan to own an AR with a fixed stock and a 18"+ barrel, it will not fit in a 36" case.

Just ordered my $70 Plano case from Amazon, and for 20 bucks got a
2-/4" thick x 24" x 48" piece of Kaizen foam ( google it ). Its ultra firm and layered foam that can make a cheap case look more upscale. The downside I hear about the Plano is the mushy pluckable foam. As soon as Im done Ill post some pics.

Do a google image search for kaisen foam gun case and you will see some great homemade cases - all depends on how neat you are tracing and cutting :)

I just Bought a Condor 36 inch Tactical bag from Optics Planet for $60 and free shipping that is well built and gets high marks in reviews. it comes in three colors and I bought the black.

For me an inexpensive soft case and my range bag is all I ever need..
My AR stays in the gun cabinet till needed on the range .
I keep my extra Mags in my range bag along with any Ammo I may need for the day as well as Ear protection, Targets, cleaning suplies ect...

Well, my case and foam arrived!
$60 Plano case from Amazon, and $20 for some Kaisen foam ( also on Amazon ). Kaisen is firmer and layered, allowing for cutting to your desired shape and depth. Im very happy with the results for my $80 and hour spent. :)

I carry my AR short barrel rifles in a Worth bat bag that cost 10$ at Academy. I place a thick foam section in the bottom of the bag. This bag is adequate for transportation to and from the range and does not shout "Assault Rifle". I like to keep a low profile.
