Changing Carry Gun - Paris etc.

I already have a S&W Shorty .45, which I have never fired, that I could use. Or, I am thinking about an M&P Shield in 9mm. I like the idea of a .45, but I am now 70 years old and think the recoil may be a bit much (I haven't fired any .45 in 10 years). And, I also like the extra ammo of the Shield. Then there is also the M&P 9mm Compact, but I think it may be to large for IWB. Oh, and I guess I could buy 4 Shield's for the value of the Shorty. LOL. A Shield for every member of the Family.

I would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks.

Unless your money is just burning a hole in your pocket I think you should at least try the 45.

I can't imagine it's that much of a capacity difference from a shield.

It's better to prepare for the type of defense snenarios you are most likely to encounter as a civilian rather than spend much time preparing for extremely rare occurrences. The snub revolver is a perfectly viable weapon based on every statistic I've ever seen on armed civilian self-defense. Somewhere on the order of 99% of them take place from contact(touching) distances out to a few yards and are resolved with very few rounds. At extreme close-quarters(ECQ) distances where muggings, rapes, armed robberies, physical assaults and carjackings occur, one could argue that the snub revolver(in particular an enclosed hammer model) is actually the superior weapon.

Not really off-topic, for this has gotten "out there" a bit . . .

The Georgia Highway Patrol recently transitioned out of the .45GAP full-size Glocks to the Glock Gen4 Model 17 (9mm), and also picked up the Glock 42, at first for a BUG. Soon they went Model 43 and offered some sweet deals to troopers on the Model 42. They guy I talked to loved both.

WHY 9MM? He said because there are some great rounds now on the market. The .45 GAP didn't sit well with shooters with smaller hands, so qualifying scores shot up with the new M17 G4s.

PLUS, in gunfights the .45GAP killed the perps eventually, but didn't put 'em down well. OTOH, the 9mm rounds today hit pretty hard, and t he rattle around inside the body, inflicting faster incapacitation, according to the trooper. The force is very happy with the M17

He also loves his G42, and being off duty when we talked, he let me handle it. Nice. He's buying one for his wife.

BTW, the new tactics call for more initial rounds at a perp. Swarm them with lots of rounds and keep shooting on a bad risk. The 9mm carries a lot more rounds.

WHAT I'M PLANNING - Before all this junk happened I'd been looking for a M19 Gen4. I never cared for the M23 .40S&W but the 9mm would be a nice thing, I believe. I'll probably still pocket carry my trusty Model 37 snubbie though, but increased firepower would probably come in very handing if stuff hits the fan one day.

My wife has also been thinking about a compact auto. I never thought she'd think about swapping her vintage Model 37, 3 inch barrel version for a pocket pistol. Additional rounds in this new age is a good thing.

Ok I dont understand how what happened in Europe or here in the USA should effect your carry choice? Any gun against a person with a "vest bomb" with a dead man switch....I will take the bomber.
How does a "dead man switch" allow you to shoot a Kalashnikov... and change magazines MULTIPLE times.

Florida Carry

Since I moved to FL 13 years ago I have pocket carried a .38 S&W 337-2. Now that it has been decided to let felons out of jail, import criminals from below the border, invite ISIS members to come on over, in addition to the home grown "Bad Boys" we already have in Florida, I have been thinking of upgrading my carry gun.

I intend to go from pocket carry to IWB.

The ladies in my family has replaced their S&W 642s with Glock 42 .380s
My EDC is a Glock 26 along with an extra Glock 17 magazine

That guy has some of his info wrong.

The 45 GAP uses the same exact frame as the Glock 17. That was the whole point of it. To have a 45 cal in a 9mm size frame. Magazines are also the same dimension.

To provide the same terminal balistics of a 230 gr 45acp the GAP was designed to opperate at higher pressure. Essentially it operates as a 45acp +P. The 230 gr GAP has 450 ft-lbs of energy and uses a 45 cal bullet. A 230 gr 45acp SD round comes in at about 430 - 450 ft-lbs and also uses a 45 cal bullet.

Thanks for all the great info. I will be taking the Shorty 45 for the next three days to the range and put at least 300 rnds through it and see how that goes. Saturday my wife will try my snubby, a 3 inch Smith Model 60 .38, a Glock 42, and both of us will get to try a 9mm Shield. We then have some range time with my IDPA instructor on Saturday afternoon for some steel. Should have enough info then to make up our minds on what is best to carry for both of us. Then it is just shoot, shoot, shoot!
PS. I don't think I will ever give up the lightweight snubby in my pocket no matter what I decide to wear IWB.

1. You'll be the coolest dude at the range with that Shorty!
2. There are some advantages to you and the Mrs. carrying the same weapon that should not be discounted.
3. A snub in the pocket is a comforting thing if you're willing to carry two guns.

There is only one problem with this. The Shorty 45 NIB is worth more than $1400, and the Shield can be picked up for under $400.

Have to agree on the Shorty. I have owned a lot of guns. Many custom or Performance Center. The two most magnificent ones are the Shorty and a high gloss Python. Incredible pieces of engineering and manufacturing.

Incredible, unbelievable headline

'Istanbul fans boo minute of silence for Paris attacks, chant "Allahu akbar" before Turkey vs Greece soccer friendly match'

WT* is this world coming to?

I don't carry because the locals are friendly but I will be putting something in the truck, 12 gauge security shotgun cuz you never know what the day will bring.
