Chill of an early fall?

A big 43 degrees as I type this. Using a burner on the gas stove to get the chill out of the kitchen as I'm not firing up the furnace for a couple of degrees this early in September.

Definitely feels like an early fall after a very wet August.

Just a few miles North of me they are issuing frost warnings! Think I am gonna close the pool this weekend - but as soon as I do that I'm sure it will be in the 80's again! Just as well, I need to do some reloading and packing for my upcoming Pheasant hunting week. Fall is my FAVORITE season.

We are still running in the 60's here. It is my favorite time of the year to work outside, light flannel shirts are perfect unless you get carried away. I used to look forward to winter, ice fishing and snowmobiling... not so much anymore though. I have about 3-4 years worth of good hardwood stacked and covered, the snow plow was just rebuilt last year. Our pair of loons have 2 young that have survived so far, first time we have had even 1 make it in over 30 years. They're getting bigger but the eagles still make me nervous when they're up scouting around.
It is a good fall.

The Best Season ...

The older I get, the more I enjoy the simplicity of Partridge Hunting... Chrisp fall air near the Canadian Border, good friends, my old Remington Model 11 "Sportsman", a pocket full of hi-brass No.5 chilled shot, Miss Katie Dog by my side and a week in camp without the pressure of hanging meat on the pole...

Making memories... I'll never forget my first double over Kate... She was pretty proud of me and frankly, I was a little choked up by how happy she was....

And at the end of the day, a little snort of Crown Royal while the day's bag is counted.

Yep... the best part of the year is just a few weeks away...

Sebago, I envy you in many ways (I can't hunt anymore), but particularly for that lovely old Remington.

It's been an unusually cool and pleasant summer in Louisville. I believe the temperature has only hit a glancing blow at 95º a couple of times, and mostly has stayed in the upper 80's to just over 90º. Nice amount of rain, too.

This morning looked like "October's bright blue weather" when I took my crazy little dog out for his morning patrol of the perimeter.

We are coming to my very favorite time of year. October has been my most enjoyed month for a great many years. Even though I can no longer hunt, the fishing is great and walking my little four-legged roommate is great even with worn-out knees.

I await with great pleasure the first time this year that I'm walking Moose and hear overhead the wild, beautiful music of great flights of sandhill cranes heading south.

Great pictures!! Those grouse look great. I'm jealous, I've only seen 2-3 on my property and I don't want to clean them out. Looks like you have a few extra. How about FedXing a few to SW VA!

Bill,

Our North Maine Woods are a Partridge Generating Machine. Some years are of course better than others, and late season shooting is not as good as early season, but the birds are always there and Miss Kate is always ready to go!...

Sorry about not being able to Fed-Ex you some though... they don't last too long... :)

Zagged,

Here's a couple of my Grouse Guns... one for nice weather and no mud, the other for when things get rainy and wet. I'll let you guess which is which... :)

Already have everything lined up, LL Bean Flannel PJ's and Flannel Robe, and my LL Bean 8" Gore-Tex/Thinsulate Boots.
I'm ready for my 67th season to begin.:)

Chill of an Early Fall....a great George Strait song! Don't feel it though. Its almost 4PM and still 92 here. It is September right?

Well, I don't know what the weather guessers might say, but it was in the high 40's this morning and only made the mide 60's today. It's been a rainy disappointing summer weather wise and the garden vegetables still are loaded with product that hasn't ripened. We're expecting low 30's overnight and a frost, so I just got in from playing the "let's cover everything over" game and move all the flower containers up on the porches. Unseasonably cool, unseasonably wet and the tree's are already losing their leaves.

Thank goodness for the approaching hunting season. Watched a herd of white tails in the back 40 all summer. Watched all the new kids and two sets of twins born this past May or early June. Plenty of Ruffed Grouse around and Turkey too. The trees are absolutely loaded down with apples, their branches sagging from the weight. Berries are everywhere, plenty forage for the wild critters this fall. Local farm neighbors are up in arms over a new neighbors dogs coursing deer, apparently irresponsible fools who will likedly be saving money on dog food in short order.

Thought I'd give you all a shout out, since I've been away from the forum awhile. The shop is busy as hell and I'm trying to steal some time in between rain storms to get the "honeydew" list done for the season....I don't think I'm gonna make it though. The weather just keeps knockin' me down on days I have the time. Well boys, I hope you're all good and I look forward to hearing about your summer.

Cheers;
Lefty

The lowest we get here currently--is about 76 F--which is on par for our 9 month long Summers.

We had a balmy 95 today, with a dry 75% humidity. This summer has been a little cooler than last. So far we have not hit 100, that I know of.

Almost the same here in in CC-we have hit over 100 several times this Summer. We also have rains in the area but my place has seen none yet.

6am in SanAntonio and it is already like 83 high should be around 100 it was 101 yesterday.
What we need it for it to RAIN.. Not rain but RAIN.
Not complaining thou yall can have the 40s in september Ill take the heat any day over cold.

Im agreeing with the RAIN part, but will take cold over heat any day. Im right on the Coast.
