I've been living in South for nearly 20 and become interested in the Civil War.

What good websites are out there?

What about some places to visit (i.e., Gettysburg)? Can anyone give me some ideas.

Please do not turn this into another north vs south thread like the one that was just locked!!!

The south is pretty big. Where in the south? I've been to all the Virginia battlefields, Gettysburg, and Antietam. They all have websites and tourist info...

If you go to the Chickamauga Battlefield they have a really great and large US military rifle collection on display in the Battlefield's museum. It was the private collection of a serious collector who died like 30 years ago and donated it. Its about 5 miles out side Chattanooga. Gettysburg is great, but its not really south. I think one of the only battles in offical Yankee territory.

Vicksburg, MS will knock your hat in the creek. Makes you marvel at how they did it.

em-man - Notheast Virginia

Charleston South Carolina would be a great place to start. Fort Morgan Alabama is also very interesting, as is Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga Tennessee.

gregintenn - be nice!! I think I understand what your not saying. We may be on the edge.

We all know where the capital was. And I don't mean Washington DC.

ladder13 - FYI, I am a transplanted Yankee. However, I was sent by the Uncle Sugar. Yes I stayed, this place began to grow on me.

BTW, did you do time at Ft Belvoir?

No, I'm just telling you about me. I'm very familar with Belvoir.

After two tours at Fort Lee in Petersburg, all I can say is spend some time around Richmond and the Penninsula then up to Fredericksburg. When I first moved here way back in 1984, I was advised to get a copy of "Lee's Lieutenants" and a good map of the area between Richmond and Norfolk. Douglas Southall Freeman put up markers throughout the region and they are all still there. Not the State's roadside historical markers, but by God big marble ones that mark actual unit locations and events. Might have to do some hiking to find them, but they're out there.

BTW, the South really starts on the south bank of the Rappahannock...

+1 This is a great museum.

If you're in Northern Virginia you're in the best place there is. There is literally so much it should take years to see it all. One thing I might suggest is studying up on Stonewall Jackson and the Valley Campaign. Not only was it one of classic military campaigns in history, it's a great path to follow.

Have fun. I wish I lived there

Kennesaw Mountain Battlefield near Marietta, Georgia. In the nearby town of Kennesaw(Big Shanty)is the restored locomotive "The General" made famous in the Disney film "The Great Locomotive Chase" or sometimes called "Anrdews' Raiders". A lot of Civil War history in the area.

BTW, Kennesaw, Ga. was the town back about '81-'82 that passed a town ordinance that every willing homeowner MUST keep a loaded firearm in the home. This was in response to Morton Grove, Ill. banning of handguns.
