Cleaning product recommendation?

Any CLP or Ballistol to clean up dirt and carbon.. Those two however will not remove any copper fouling or lead. If you remove the barrel you can use any bore solvent in it and then use the clp and a toothbrush to clean everything else, including the polymer without worry.

I was told that since it has ammonia, it's bad for the polymer and such

The hoppes no. 9 benchrest shooters bore cleaner has a lot of ammonia in it but the regular has very little. the higher ammonia contents are for getting rid of the copper fouling. I wouldn't use the benchrest on polymer but even that probably wouldn't do too much to it.

Hope's 9 is safe to use in polymer guns that's what I started to use since my first gun years ago, now I use CLP because it doesn't stinks like hope's and also lubricates.

What do you mean " stinks "?

I would wear it as an after-shave sometimes if my wife would let me.
While most men like it, it seems women are born with a pre-natal extreme dislike for the smell of Hoppe's.

I can't for the life of me figure out what it is but something in hoppes smells very familiar to me. the first time I smelled it, it reminded me of something but to this day I still can't figure out what.

I kinda want to get one of those hoppes no.9 car air fresheners... is that weird?

cleaning product recommendation

John Reid:

I noticed you recommended BOTH Hoppe's No. 9 and M-Pro 7 cleaning products. What can you say about any noticeable differences or preferences between the two products, as M-Pro 7 is manufactured by Hoppe's No. 9?
I recently saw a video on You Tube by a chemist who tested four different cleaners for lead and copper dissolution, with Hoppe's No. 9 coming out on top for the largest (quantitative) dissolution of both lead and copper.
Thanks!

And that test wasn't even done with the HD extreme... It was the regular red cap stuff. If you look close at the pictures of the group of products he used you can see the regular can. For some reason in the little links towards the top of the page shows the HD. If the original stuff works that well, I can only imagine the HD is that much better.

I have been using Hoppes to clean and Rand CLP for wiping down and in the bore . Seems like the crud is easier to clean since I have been using it!

I'll say it like I do on all these threads. People overthink cleaning and my suggestion is ONE and DONE.
Ballistol, Slip2000 or any single lubricant that cleans and lubricates will work just fine. I see people with 3 or 4 bottles sitting on the table. This is for the barrel, this is for the slide, this is for blah blah blah.

Go get some Mobil 1 oil if you want. It will work just as good as anything else.

Good luck.

Hopped no.9 synthetic won't harm plastic or nickel. But I see it's now discontinued.

I grew up using Hoppes #9, but no more. In terms of safety, I would be much more worried about what it might be doing to your health rather than any harm to a gun. A gun is just a tool and easily replaced. Your health not so much so. The hierarchy is the gun is there to protect me, not the other way around. There are way too many good non-toxic options available to use such an outdated product IMO.

Any good solvent will work fine. I use rem oil and a little grease on the rails and I am good to go

Your grandpa. Hoppes #9 retains it's popularity today because it reminds you of the first time grandpa let you shoot his gun even though you can't remember it.

I also love the smell of a tire store.

Frog Lube is my choice for the M&P line.

I also have used Frog Lube on my M&P's, on my 2011's I use Brake Clean and Mobil 1 (because I clean them more often and it's quicker and easier. Spray the brake clean to get the powder residue off, then blow it dry with compressed air and drench it with Mobil One 0W-20 (same stuff that both our cars call for, I take the dregs of the bottle for gun lube). I clean the STI every match, the M&P....when I feel like it. :D

I've used Butch's Bore Shine for years. In my rifles I run a patch down and let it sit while I watch the golf match. Go out about every 30 minutes, run a brush down, then a clean patch and more Shine. After about 9 holes it's pretty clean. Hey, you gotta measure it somehow.

In my pistols i only shoot lead. Use Bore Shine on those too but after letting it sit for a bit get a mob and wrap it with ChoreBoy. Clean in about 5 passes. Been trying Kroil lately to see if it loosens the lead better but so far haven't really decided it's any better simply because the ChoreBoy is what really cleans out the lead.

I agree, you can overthink this.

Give a look at Hoppe's Elite Gun Cleaner , smells good, low odor and safe on plastic. I can clean a gun with it and put it on the night stand without my wife complaing of the "smell" , she has the nose of a bloodhound. And it's a decent cleaner .

How resilient is a pistol barrels rifling? I shoot air rifles and I know the rifling is easily scratched so we rarely clean the lead out of them. Also helps with accuracy
