colt (I know, I know) officers Hammer Tension question

I used to do that too, especially with a friends pistol w/an extended slide release. The regular GI part,,no problem.

A couple of other mechanical things to look at when it all of a sudden starts happening are the ammo.,,
The edge of the bullet is supposed to clear the slide stop inside the mag. But some will just barely be able to touch it, especially in recoil when the rounds in the mag are as far forward as possible.
Even w/ball ammo of the exact same weight, the bullet shape can be ever so slightly different between mfg'r. OAL can be different by a few .000" and cause a problem when mixed w/ bullet shape and the right magazine.

Sometimes just switching magazines will correct the problem. They are not all created equal, even if made by the same 'Maker'.

The slide stop/safety spring & plunger assembly can also allow the slide stop to engage while live rounds are still in the mag during firing.
If the spring is a bit weak, and/or the recoil is all of a sudden more than experienced before (as in lightening the springs), the plunger will in an instant loose it's proper detent engagement on the slide stop and can occassionally
catch the slide on return and lock it.

Check for a loose slide stop spring 'tube' also. It's rivited (or at least used to be on 1911's) to the frame and can come loose.
If it is loose, it can give poor or limited engagement between the plunger and the slidestop (and thumb safety) as it moves around slightly.

Just some thoughts.

yea ive been knocking down some of these issues. junked my GI mags for wilsons and that killed all my FTF's. just found the plunger tube is loose so have to order a new one...

You can probably just restake the plunger tube rather than replace. Sometimes the staking just gets loose from use. A good smith could probably do that in a few minutes for small $$$ (or you can at home if you have the tool).

ETA: That could be causing the slide lock engagement.

it could be a part of it but since going to wilson mags it hasn't done it...

yea ive been training on condition 2. two reason are thats how dad was taught in DOD back in the day and mine if F**Kin sharp! i have to do some rounding on the back end of this thing... another is ive always been a believer in not trusting safeties...

Do whatever you like but here is an example of why C2 isn't necessarily the safest choice. You run a far greater change of a ND by lowering the hammer on a live road than by carrying the gun in C1.

Saw this post on The High Road earlier today-
Accidental disharge 1911.....Help...Killed the stuffed bear on the bed.

Im sure Im going to catch hell , but Im coming here to clarify a safety issue on my new 1911 Ruger. Im very familiar with double/single action pistols with decockers.....never a problem....ever. But I just bought my very first SR1911 and cocked and locked just plain bothered me. Also carrying a unchambered , uncocked weapon just didnt seem right either.......so........I decided the best for me was to put the hammer down on a chambered round , so when needed all I had to do was cock aim and fire. Well......after practicing alot , and still not really feeling great about it my finger and thumb slipped !!! Long story short hole in bed , dead stuffed teddy bear , and fresh spackle on the wall. I feel so bad , just terrible.I want to hear others opinions on *** gives . Im very safety conscious , just maybe too careful and uncomfortable with a 1911's function...........Help. Have others had similar reservations about cocked and locked ,and if so how did you get over it or what decision did you eventually come to ? Im beginning to think maybe cocked and locked would actually be much safer as lowering the hammer on a chambered round just may be asking for trouble at some point even if its been done millions of times ? Am I right ?

unless you drop it from half way its not going to go off, as you know the pin has to move just over an 1/8" past the firing pin stop (so bounce) to hit the primer. i point it in a safe direction and really grab the hammer...

so my next question

i need to find a 25 and/or 26 lbs recoil for officers. going to the lighter hammer spring made it like going back to the light recoil spring... so anybody know where i can get one? or make it out of?
