I want to rebarrel my old 686 from 6" to 4". Anyone have a factory rebarrel? How much? Or, should I go to an independent gunsmith? How much?

I have a feeling that it may be less costly to sell the 6" and buy a 4" gun.

dang it, just keep the 6 and buy a 4 !!
Numrich Gun Parts may have one, and you can also look on Gun Broker.com for a barrel.

Does your no dash have the M stamp? If not you can get free shipping back and forth to the factory.
I bought a 4" tube for my 6" 586 no dash for $75 here on the forum then sent my 586 into S&W for the M recall, I shipped the 4" tube along with it and S&W swapped the barrels for $60. I then sold the 6" barrel to help ofset the costs. I also had the gun refinished while it was back at the factory.

According to the factory parts list the cost of a 4" bbl is $132 so I'd be looking at $192 plus shipping. I'm still thinking it over. The other posts have me second guessing myself.
