Buy once, cry once. The cushioned backstrap on the 405 is the only way I'd shoot my 340PD with magnum loads. It's under 12 ounces and without the cushioned backstrap, it's brutal. The guy I bought it from put 12 rounds through it then sold it to me for $450. MSRP on S&W's website is currently $1149.00. Paying a little more for a set of CT grips that's a hand saver was a no brainer for a gun I always have in my pocket. l bought them about 18 years ago. Don't remember what they cost back then. Didn't care.
I understand, recoil tolerance is different for every one. I have the CT button grips on 4 wheel guns, the model 637, weighs 14.5 ounces and I shoot only 38 Plus P in it, not a problem at all; the model 66,, 2.5 inch weighs about 30 ounces, I shoot all 357 in it, not pleasant, but it is the gun I carry in hand when walking out in cougar country during bow, black powder and gun season after dark, I have been 40 foot from cougars, I do not care if it kicks a bit; and my model 60 3 inch, I shoot all 357 in it, weighs 24.5 ounces, not pleasant but once again, it is not carried for pleasure shooting, I tolerate the recoil.
I have no interest in a 12 ounce 357, I have SLAC ( both wrists crumbled beyond surgical repair), so I just get by with these and the dots are for night use of course and they work great for me and my purposes. A man has to know his limitations and I am pretty sure that is one of mine.
I am also older, 76, and losing the enjoyment of shooting my 44s, especially the one with the 2.5 inch barrel that weighs 30.5 ounces, that said, I often fire that one, only one cylinder with full power loads, and that is the last thing fired that day.
I am leaning toward buying shooting gloves and maybe wrist brace, just a thought.
