Crooks Are Everywhere?!!

I covered local politics for almost 30 years and there were many folks who were at least TRYING to do the "right thing," whenever they could agree on what that might be.

And there was the occasional jerk, doofus and once in a great while, downright crook. But most were honest. Just MHO.

Local governments have various boards and commissions that need to have volunteers willing to work on them. You don't have to run for election, you just have to apply when the vacancies become available. I have seen the vacancies listed in the classified section of the local paper.

You've lived in the town all your life? Great, you provide an institutional memory. You've only lived in town for a few years (like I did)? This is a way to become a part of your new community. Plus you can tell your new community how to avoid the mistakes that were made in your old community (which I have done).

Yes, your life can have legitimate time constraints. I'm the secretary of the town planning commission, and I figure I put in 6-7 hours in any month the commission has a meeting. And yes, being retired and an old bachelor probably makes it a bit easier to give the time I spend as a volunteer for this commission. I've been on this commission for 15 years, and I if I didn't think it was important and didn't enjoy it I wouldn't have stayed on it this long.

And what benefit do I get out of doing this when I haven't received a dime? I get the satisfaction of giving back to the community in which I have chosen to reside, and I get the means to follow my old doctor's advice of having something to do in retirement that keeps my mind active.

Back in the day, scams were the exception. Today, they are the rule unless unequivocally ruled out! Remember, scamming starts at the top and works its way down - that's where we are now.

Also never "unsubscribe" from an e-mail. It just tells the sender that the account is active and they sell your address to somebody else.

This post falls in the old saying “I learn something new everyday.”. I never thought about it like that. Thanks for the lesson. My late 89 year old stepfather used to love hearing the phone ring, check the caller ID, noting a spam call, then answering it and immediately hanging up. He would do it and laugh, thinking about how he got over on them! I always reminded him that he was only letting the caller know that SOMEONE was on the other end, and it was better not to answer it.

Years ago I kept getting spam emails about pest control from this company. Ignored them at first but started getting several a day. Since they gave their address I simply went online and found several pest control companies close to them. Filled in a name and used their address for contact for services. Strange how their emails stopped, lol.

I like to answer those and talk in a fake language. "Hongvia constanta vousgierz." I need to learn Klingon.

You mean all those women in their 20s sending me friend requests don't want me for their daddy figure. I though it was that or the fact that I donate all the neat stuff I keep winning to the animal shelter.

then there are my very good political friends who values my opinion, as long as I donate to their cause.

On a local level: Six ex-cons, four of whom recently got out of prison, moved into a house about two miles down the road from me a few months ago. Traffic on this road picked up and things started disappearing. I retired from law enforcement ten years ago after over 40 years of service. I called the local sheriff about two weeks ago and told him what we had going on and who most of the occupants of the house were. He listens to me because I was his Captain when he was a rookie back in the early 80's. Same thing with the sheriff in the next county over. A few old snitches had also called me and told me a lot of meth and stolen stuff was moving in and out of that house. They called me because I would never mention their name to anyone, not even a LEO. Yesterday afternoon the house got raided. Two of the convicts hit the woods. Two didn't run because it wouldn't have done any good. Two weren't there at the time of the raid. The local Metro Narcotics did the raid. They found meth and thousands of dollars worth of stolen items. That is why I still pack while mowing the grass or riding my tractor. I don't ever go outside unarmed. It would be a bad idea if you wanted to try a home invasion. Old habits are hard to break. I wish I could do the same with the scammers but I ain't geared for that.

I got one of those messages this week . The PO needs to make a delivery but my information is incomplete . Just click on this link and follow the instructions ... I don't think so .

I got a question for you folks. I just realized that I can choose a “Block Sender” option on my emails. Is this something that I should do or is it akin to unsubscribing? Also, if this isn’t an option, what can I do besides just taking it?

I'm building a house for myself and crooks stole the second floor 3/4" decking worth about 3 grand. Then I had the roof loaded with shingles and the roofer worked one day and someone came that night and stole about another 3 grand worth shingles. My builders risk insurance policy has a $5,000 deductible per each theft, so no luck there. I even had cameras out and they pointed them at the ceiling.

That is UNBELIEVABLE!! I don’t think I will ever move to Edmond, OK, or even visit for that matter! Sounds like someone might steal my clothes……while I’m wearing them!

Sounds like an armed over night camp-out is in the books the next time a load of material arrives.
