Okay, so I've been gone for some time, and when I was last there, the City was using Federal NYCLAD 158 gr semi-waddcutters, then moved to a NYCLAD hollowpoint, for service, and off-duty .38 revolvers.

Is there anyone in the know with what is being issued at Rodman's Neck, now?
Any current MOS, that are still qualified and carrying a .38?

Current NYPD 38+P

Im not on your job but the current issue is Speer Gold Dot 135 Grain +P jacketed hollow point. On or off duty. 9MM is Speer 124 +P hollow point. The 38 was developed by Speer and Rodmans Neck.

The Speer GD .38 short barrel load is 135 grain, and the regular load is 125 grain. Does the NYPD issue 135 grain SB loads regardless of barrel length?

I have first hand information that the NYPD uses only 1 .38 Special round no matter what the barrel length of the revolver. (the 135gr Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel load)

Yes, The answer is that currently the 125 gr GDHP Speer round is what is being carried in all .38 revolvers.
There is a backorder on the 135 gr cartridge, and when delivery is made, all revolver re-quals will be issued the new round, if they haven't been already.

Nassau County, has also followed suit. The same is true there.

It only took 15 years, but it seems now that there will be one manufacturer for all handgun service ammunition. That includes off-duty.
SPEER
9mm +P = 124 gr GDHP
.38 Spl +P = 125 soon to be 135 gr GDHP
.40 S&W = 180 soon to be 155 gr GDHP

Interesting. I'm currently using 125 gr +P Gold Dots in my .38 snubbies because my order of the 135 gr ammo is on backorder. I also use 124 gr +P Gold Dots in my Glocks. New York PD confirms my choices.

This may be what NJDET is asking, but I was not aware that NYPD used .40? I thought they were strictly 9mm and 38.

Does the NYPD train/qualify with the gold dots too or do they use speer lawman stuff?

Training is with the duty ammo.

AFAIK ESU carries 9mm/.38 Spcl, but pilot programs sometimes use ESU, so maybe they're experimenting with .40 S&W.

I see no reason to choose any other bullet for a short barrel .38 Special. The 135gr Gold Dot bullet was specifically designed to reliable expand at the velocities associated with a short barrel revolver. That bullet as loaded in the short barrel Speer ammo is a great round IMO. As far as I know it's the first and only bullet so designed. (not to say there aren't other bullets that will also expand)

I think the 'test results' that Speer put out about the NYPD 'snubby' load included data for its use in S&W 10's w/ 4" barrel; if it wasn't them I think someone did a quick-n-dirty eval test & write-up a few years ago in some gun rag...did over 1000 fps which is @ the advertised speed for the .357 mag 'short barrel' load from a 2" barreled revolver...the same bullet is used for both loads

*** that didn't sound right...let me clarify; the .38 spl +p 'short barrel' load was shot from a S&W 10 w/ 4" barrel and did just at or above 1000fps; the 135gr jhp Speer Gold Dot projectile is used for both their .38 spl +p short barrel load and .357 mag short barrel load; now that sounds better***

That's correct, and that bullet, in .357 from a 1 7/8" gun, is a guaranteed expander when fired through four layers of denim into Perma-Gel.

My Brother is NYPD Retired and then it was Speer Gold Dot 135 grain for the 38 Special Revolvers.I had heard from friends now in NYPD unless you were grandfathered prior to conversion to 9mm you can't carry a 38 revolver on or off duty and still be indemnified.......Mike
