When I was practicing law, I represented law enforcement officers for 30 years in civil rights cases and wrongful death cases. As you can imagine, these incidents are emotionally and psychologically packed. Few people know what is going on in the minds of the officers following the incident. While defending these brave officers, I contacted the best experts I could on how to defend and deal with my officers. Dr. Alexis Artwohl was the best of the best. Although she had recently retired and no longer testified in cases she put me in contact with others that did. She also sent me a copy of her book: Deadly Force Encounters, Second Edition: Cops and Citizens Defending Themselves and Others Paperback by Alexis Artwohl Ph.D. (Author), Loren W. Christensen (Author). Every officer should have this book. Not only for themselves but to help deal with fellow officers involved in a deadly force encounter. In addition, every concealed carrying individual should also read this book. Know ahead of time what is going to happen so you are prepared (at least as much as possible). For others that may have read this book, please share your thoughts below.

Has anyone written a book called Stand Still Follow Directions And We’ll All Get Through This. Va is now in the national spotlight with 7 Deputies charged. I doubt few understand the thoughts, the fears, and the adrenaline that goes through someone involved in a confrontation.

Stand Still Follow Directions And We’ll All Get Through This.

My dad trained me by say something similar, if I didn't do as I was told I got smacked. Thats how I learned not to get shot by cops! The disintegration of the family unit is putting a whole generation (or 2 or 3) in danger of getting shot!

Yep. When you are taught that 'the police hate you because of the way you look, and they shoot people like you for no reason', and those falsehoods are perpetuated in movies, TV shows, and by "news commentators", and your upbringing includes little to no discipline or consequences for bad behavior; when you are educated past your intelligence and let someone convince you that you are a "sovereign citizen" ruled only by ancient maritime law and do not have to obey the authority of the police and the courts; when you refuse to control your own body, emotions, and actions sans mental illness; when narcissism is your 'religion' and your claim to 'rights' . . . . .

Immediately refusing to stop, running from the police, fighting/resisting an arrest, and then claiming for a reason, "Well, I was scared", or "you have no authority over me" . . . . a disease unleashed upon the country by the failure of the culture to hold on to traditional values of faith, personal responsibility, respect for authority . . . . it's all by design, as all the institutions that made the country successful for over two centuries must be destroyed and torn down before socialism can supplant them. George Orwell was prescient when he wrote "1984" in describing a society that resembles, the case could be made, the direction we are headed.

No one can really be prepared for the experience of being involved in a deadly force encounter, I know from personal experience. That said this book sounds like a good idea for anyone who carries daily.

I just ordered the book.
I ordered a similar book, "In Defense of Self and Others" by Patrick and Hall on a forum recommendation. That one was worth its price for the excellent chapter on wound ballistics and human responses to getting shot. That may also have been recommended by the OP

There's nothing the real world to straighten out someone's bent brain. And nothing like past performance of experts to assist in straightening out a good guy's brain. I'm getting that book!

And another excellent book.

Yeah, I knew that the day that parents stopped beating their children it would be all downhilll from there. :D:D:D:D:D

I took a class called MAG40 from Mas Ayoob. Half of the class dealt with what to do if you are involved in a shooting as a civilian. Eye-opening for this old time cop, now a civilian. If I’m involved in a critical incident, the money spent on the class could be my best investment ever.

If it's still on Utube, there's a video on "How Not to Get Your A** Beat by the Police". Think it was by Chris Rock. While having some really lousy acting in some places, it's a really good message. More people should watch it and follow the advice. Unfortunately, to entirely too many, common sense and politeness is considered, at best, unmanly.

I've read the Deadly Force Encounters book. There are a few things Mas mentions in class they didn't specifically cover. Violent Event Trauma (vehicle accidents and shootings) were distinct from PTSD. Some recent blurbs in local papers suggest that no longer may be the case-at least in the view of the main head shrinker guild. The book was unclear about this.

First, while there are many possible reactions to your actions either by others or within yourself, you can count on two. The first was termed Mark of Cain by the NYPD therapist who coined it. You will be viewed differently by most of those you know or meet. You will now be "The One Who Killed". There will be those who will not wish to associate with you (or let their kids play with yours). They may also be horrified by your actions if they were present and feel you endangered them. Some, with unclear motives. may start referring to you as "Killer".

The second one is sleep disturbance. It's not unusual for those who were in accidents to have dreams repeating the experience. While it's not 100%, in use of force incidents, there seem to be 2 versions of this. In one, your gunfire is ineffective and the violent criminal actor (VCA) continues their assault. The other is that your firearm won't function and the assault continues. On some nights you'll get to experience both. You're not going nuts, this is normal, it will fade as your brain processes the incident and comes to terms with it.

My PD Psychologist, Dr. Michael Teague (now deceased) began a program eventually called CISD - Critical Incident Stress Debriefing.
It was based on a similar process began by the FBI.
It involved a peer group of officers to simply talk (we're not trained counselors) with an officer involved in a critical incident, and for the most part assure him or her that what they may be experiencing in the aftermath is simply a normal reaction to a very abnormal event.

I was proud to be a part of this group and also that it did indeed help many officers involved in critical incidents of many different types.

Been retired since 2008 - and can testify that a LOT of job-related stuff stays with you forever. Much I'd like to delete from my mental hard-drive - but it doesn't work that way.

Thank you for posting this. On sleepless nights I go back to things from 50 years ago, walking the Beat. For 16 years I was assigned planning and training with a side job of "Shooting Response Team " Investigating officer involved shootings.

I'm often bewildered by the amount of posters on gun forums who feel the need to "EDC" huge pistols with laser, red dots and multiple magazines. They have absolutely no conception of what trauma the future will bring.
