Details on a 686-5 5"?

I found a listing for a used 686-5 5" that is quite interesting and I'm contemplating purchasing. However, looking through the SCSW, I can't find any mention of a 5" barrel ever being made in the 686-5 time range...

Does anyone have any ideas before I contact the seller?

I picked one up from a forum member here not long ago. It has Hi viz front sights & is a 7 shot. Type in 686 5" using the Find feature & the 1st thread there talks about & includes a link showing the ad w/pic for them.

I have one too. Its got no internal lock, is a 7-shooter with orange hi-viz front sight. The rear is a V-notch sight if I remember right. I'm pretty sure it was some sort of "dealer special". Its a pretty good gun, I thought it would feel too heavy towards the muzzle with that 5" full lug. But turns out it balance pretty well, and even hot loads are easy to handle it. It is a great gun, I say buy it.

There was a later 1/2 lug 5" unit as well, don't have a data sheet on that one... bummer, interesting gun.

I wonder why SCSW doesn't mention this one. I guess it's not as thorough as I originally thought.

My god this one looks interesting. I hope my guy still has it!

I have one. It came with revolting Hi-Viz sights and that ridiculous V-notch rear. Naturally, I sent it back and had a serrated ramp installed and I had the rear blade changed to a standard square notch. It has Ahrends finger groove grips. By the way - while it was at S&W, I had them do one of their "duty action" jobs and it is a little lighter, but way smoother! This is what all S&Ws will be like in heaven!

In my opinion, the 686 is the perfect platform for the .357 magnum. Big enough for the heaviest loads and light enough and small enough for most anyone to carry.

I have had a 4" Custom model for years and just recently added a 6" no lock model. I have fitted my 6" with a Red Dot sight and it shoots VERY well.

Excellent revolvers.
