Dislike of televised sporting events

I used to enjoy watching pro-football on TV, I was never a big NASCAR fan, I always preferred drag racing or off road racing. Hunting shows, I can take them or leave them at times. I quit watching football when players began having more loyalty to the dollars than the team. Then when the best players seemed to be crack addicts and criminals, I decided I wasn't going to bother with it anymore. But to be honest, I find less and less to watch on TV these days, its either reality TV showing someone trying to get something past someone else, or someone elses life collapsing in front of the whole world. No thanks. I get more done by going into the basement when I can and crank out a few rounds on my press. One of the best reasons I like working 2nd shift, there's never anything on.

David,
It doesn't matter what shift you work! How'd ya' like to get stuck having to watch Oprah?
There's still "nothing on"? Due just exactly to the reasons you described. When I get home (02:00 local) the only thing on are Extenze infomercials and C-SPAN. I've decided that the reason everyone has to have 337 channels now, is so they can find one channel worth watching? I didn't have that problem in the past. There was usually one good thing on in prime time between the three network channels available. If not, the Ol' man could always find a useful way to pass the time. I get more like him daily...

I've managed to not watch a single ball player do _anything_ since around 1984. The last round ball game I watched was the Globetrotters circa 1964.

I just don't relate to watching someone chasing a ball around. And especially the pageantry and countless advertising opportunities associated.

The remote control works fine for eliminating those endless dreary Big Game moments.

It doesn't matter the _shape_ of the ball....the mere existence of a 'ball' and all that derives therefrom somehow is of no personal interest.

Field & track events don't annoy in the same way; sometimes I'll watch those...

Somehow life goes on.....

My last sporting event INTENTIONALLY watched was the Superbowl that the Bears won ('86?) I figured it would never happen again, and I believe I was right. Haven't watched another professional sporting event since.

The cafe where I used to eat lunch ALWAYS had ESPN on. I'd always be reading a gun, history or photography publication of some sort. Every once in a while I'd see color or motion and look up, realize it was sports and return my attention to lunch and the operating principles of the Schwarzlose heavy machine gun.

I like sports in general but don't watch that much on TV. I get tickets from the company once or twice a year and take the family. How can I refuse Avalanche tickets when the seats are on the glass? I do enjoy this time of year and watch football on Sundays after church. It is my one day I can unwind. I have three girls in the house, and leave the room when the find a "sport" they want to watch (gymnastics, English riding/jumping, ice skating...).

When the cities build shooting ranges to match the overdone stadia and arenae built only for hyperthyrondic anomalies to throw balls, then I won't mind my tax money supporting sports.
If shooting ranges generated revenue like big time sports the cities would be falling all over themselves building ranges. It doesn't so they won't..."follow the money" works every time.

Myself, don't watch sports much on TV but it's hard to beat a good tailgate or Superbowl party.

TV sports are best seen minus sound, and there are loads of civic minded athletes, who should get more publicity for it. The media is more interested in bad news than good, I suppose. Oh, well--play on.

I'm actually quite vocal in my extreme dislike of professional sports of all kinds. It absolutely drives me crazy that our society makes multimillionaires out of people for playing a game ... while making paupers out of those who feed, educate, house, and clothe us.

I have never hated any "professional Sport;" however, I also have no real desire to watch them. I usually watch the Super Bowl, World Series, and World Cup Soccer finals. I do that because they are usually good games. The rest of the time it's take it or leave it. I admit that Basket ball bores me to tears. That says a lot from someone who can watch soccer.

I also have NEVER tried to judge anyone who LIKES, LOVES, or HATE sports. Just don't try to convert me is all I ask.

Sport on TV is a good thing IF you can get to see the sport you want. Too often a similar competing sport gets into bed with a major network and tries to kill off anything similar. Motor racing is a prime example. The NASCAR channels, sorry, Fox and Speed, only put other motorsport on at odd times and have driven the World Rally Championship into an odd Sunday morning spot on Discovery Theatre with no reruns.

Oh, and don't get me started on pre-event shows, especially for American Football and NASCAR. As somebody else mentioned, an opportunity for some has-beens or never-weres to make some money while the network squeezes a few more dollars from the advertisers. Bleuch!!!

I'll watch NASCAR and Da Bears and Da Cubs and Da Sox (White only) but only with like an hour of ViVo minutes built up so I can skip all of the commercials. (There's usually more than and hour worth of commercials on a NASCAR broadcast though)
I way prefer to go to White Sox games though - GREAT food at Da Cell!

I also buy the DirecTV NHL Center Ice package, but would way prefer watching the Hawks in person.
Hockey is just much better in person - The sounds really make the game more exciting.

As much as many of you love America it surprises me the disdain for organized sports. I understand the dislike for the commercialization.

Sports are as American as Apple Pie and YOUR GUNS! It teaches our youth the importance of being in good physical condition, teamwork, and LOSING SUCKS! Americans don't like to lose!

Soccer, that's a Commy plot to teach us keeping score is over rated, we are all the same, etc. AND you cant use your hands? What's up with that?

Used to be an avid pro-football fan. Gave it all up when the Broncos won back to back Superbowls with John Elway at the helm. Elway retired after that and my interest in football ended. Figured they'd never be able to duplicate that feat again (and they haven't). I get lots more done on Sundays now.

Pro sports

I live in Northern Ca. I became a SF 49er fan back in the Bill Walsh,Joe Montana,Roger Craig etc. era. When I was kid everyone around here were Raider fans. I got over that quickly when Al Davis moved them to LA in the middle of the night.
I root for the SF Giants, last year I watched most of the playoff and World Series games. That was more professional sport watching in 3 weeks than I had watched in the past 10 years combined.
I whitewater kayak 30-40 days a year. I fish some and hunt a little and I ride a mountain bike or hike once in a while plus I have my lovely wife to spend time with as well as a house to maintain and of course I have a job. All of this doesn't leave much time to watch pro sports.
Generally I might watch a couple of innings of baseball or 1/2 of a football game once in a while.

By the way, this is my 1st post on this forum. Hi everyone!

Ricky

I only watch baseball, and I love it. I don't have cable so I don't get to see many games. Luckily one of the stations around here picks up a local station from Philly so I get a Phillies game once a week.

The only time I "hate" football or basketball is when it interrupts my regularly scheduled programing. ;) One thing I don't like about timed sports is the lame clock manipulation they pull towards the end of the game.. especially basketball where the last two minutes of clock time takes 20 minutes.. and the entire time is spent fouling the other team.

Sportscasters seem to all have the same long list of cliches that get repeated over and over and over...just insert a different players name every few minutes and repeat....Ichabod Gugenhiemer is all psyched up for the challenge...Freddie Fuddpucker gave a 110%....Iggy Flyswatter just couldn't go the distance....etc..etc..ad nauseum. How many times can one listen to such an endless stream of manure without puking or going to sleep?
