do you carry at home?

Charlie Sherrill -

My neighbor, who has a handgun carry license, went outside when he heard noises which turned out to me some young Hispanic gentlemen breaking into cars in the pre-dawn hours. When the young gentlemen found garage door openers in cars, they also started ransacking the garages. My neighbor failed to take his handgun with him and was hit in the upper arm repeatedly. Nothing broke, but it was pretty useless for a few weeks. I raised hell with Bob for not taking his gun outside.

I don't go out my door in the dark without a gun and a flashlight. I hope your friend fully recovers soon.

Be safe. Be aware. Be armed.

My wife and I both carry from the time we get dressed until the handguns go on the nightstands when we go to bed. What we carry and whether it is open or concealed depends on where we spent most of our time that day.

I understand it's legal to carry on college campuses in Oregon!?

I always have at least one gun on me, or right next to me. When I'm drinking my coffee on the couch on the computer, it's next to me. When around the house before getting dressed, the Mustang or LCP is in my PJ pockets. When I'm dressed, one of the revolvers or 1911's is where it belongs.

Another Thought!

Except in the shower or in bed! Always have one handy next to the bed! They don't do much good if their not close!

I live in the country, just outside of a large city. Crime is no longer a big city issue and is slowly moving out to the rural areas. Inside my home a gun is always within reach and when outside I usually keep one in my pocket. As a retired state trooper I'm well trained with firearms and my wife is NRA qualified, having a CCW permit. Remember the Boy Scout saying - Be Prepared.

While at home, I carry a Ruger LCR .357 in my right front pocket and 2 Speed Strips and a Streamlight in my left front pocket.

100% of home invasions happen at home.

I have to admit that I was initially surprised that so many of you carry at home.
But after I read Best Weapon For Home Defense, I understood.

IMO, it is a very sad statement about our society that many of us fear home invasion so much that we need to carry in what should be a very safe environment. Somehow our home is no longer our "castle".

So I have a few questions for those of you who carry at home:
  1. Does this inhibit/preclude any activities at home that you would otherwise enjoy?
  2. Does carrying at home make you feel safer?
  3. Does carrying make everyone in your home more relaxed, or more tense?

Yes to carry at home both concealed and open. I have a cover garment at the door if I am not wearing it. Sometimes will take the trash out OC but generally try to cover up.

The only activities it would preclude are not ones where any garments are required ;-)

Yes much safer. I live on a farm with significant predator pressure. Having had large predators at the door I no longer go outside without something suitable on my person unless I am doing stuff where I cannot carry. In those cases I check outside before opening the doors.

More relaxed I think. Only other member of the house is hubby. He also carries most of the time. I am probably more consistent but then I'm the one who nearly became lunch to one of our local wildlife predators. Yes lunch, as in high noon not even dusk or dawn. My EDC is a bit smaller and easier to carry than his. He's still looking for the best options for weapon, holster, clothing.

1. No.

2. I AM safer, as are my family members.

3. It's just a matter of fact. Nothing to be tense about.

I drop an LCP in a pocket in the morning and it stays there until I go to bed. My wallet stays in a pocket too. So does a small knife in the watch pocket. It's what I do.

I'm no more concerned that I'll need the gun than I'll need my wallet or knife while snoozing on the couch watching TV. I'm in and out of the house a lot through the day. It would be a nuisance to arm and disarm myself every time I go in and out the front door, back door or garage door. Besides, I'd forget most of the time. Gun carry isn't something that's on my mind through the day other than when talking to you fine folks.

The LCP in a DeSantis Nemesis holster is about the size of my wallet and a bit thinner. It carries unnoticed by me. It serves no purpose to arm and disarm myself every time I enter or exit the house. So why bother?

To answer you questions, it's just a gun in my pocket.
I think a lot of folks overthink this stuff.

I don't carry a gun at home because I fear a home invasion, I carry a gun at home because it's cheap insurance. The likelihood is I will never need a gun (ever really) in my home but I would hate to be stuck in my living room with a thug between me and my gun in my Bedroom.

There are enough compact guns on the market that there's really no reason not to have one for around the house.

If I have pants on, I have a gun on. If I am home I normally open carry. Here a statistics you can take to the bank 100% of home invasion happen in someone's home.

Yes, wife and I both carry at home and everywhere else. The Rio Grande is about 100' from our back door. Even though our back yard is fenced, we get occasional "visitors" in our front yard. Javelinas, skunks, etc. Of course we have killed our share of rattlesnakes as well. So far we have not encountered any 2 legged pests.

First of all, I don't carry at home out of fear. I carry a gun on a duty belt every day at work to protect people. Why would I be less prepared to protect my family than I am to protect my clients (government employees, elected officials, and their staffs)?

1. Carrying a gun doesn't stop me from doing anything that requires being dressed. [emoji41]

2. No, nor does it make me feel less safe. I carry a gun just as a matter of course. It's what I do.

3. My family doesn't tense up because I'm armed. They occasionally tense up when the coyotes get too close, but they know what to do if the song dogs come into the yard.

Since home invasion as a criminal tactic seems to be on the increase and law enforcement is under pressure, mostly for financial and political reasons, it seems ludicrous to me to depend on others who may not be readily available when needed.

wellllll lets see.... ummm
1. no
2. would rather have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it
3. non issue

Guns are as common in my home as pasta. The wife and kids don't freak out at all. Everybody knows I always have a gun, or two, or three, and that's the way it is. Much like most things in life, if that's the way it's always been, then nobody gives it a second thought. Everybody here knows that guns are always considered loaded, always stay pointed in a safe direction, and don't get left lying around if I'm not nearby . . . And they also know that Dad will keep the trouble away.
