Do you have OCD?

Wikipedia describes it as:

My wife says that I display some of these symptoms in various situations.

- We share a safe where I keep my pistols and she keeps some of her jewelry. I am very "concerned" that all of the pistols are sitting "properly positioned" and undisturbed in their racks.
- I cannot walk past a drawer that in not completely closed without going back to fully shut it.
- Coming into the house, if I notice a branch or piece of trash that is laying in the yard... this causes me agitation until I go back and remove the offending piece.
- Every day I run a 2 mile course and have a streak going of 272 consecutive days (but who's counting?). I start getting antsy if I think that something is going to cause me to miss a day.
- If something sticky (like honey or jam) gets on anything I'm around, I can not rest until it's wiped clean and sticky-free.
- Putting on my shoes or socks, I must put on the left one first... otherwise, they just don't feel right.

I have no idea why she thinks of me this way. It's just normal for me. How about you?
It's not quite normal for me, but it all makes sense, except for the last one, and it sounds like you are simply neat and orderly.

However, I must say that if it shows OCD that YOU are concerned about the order in which socks go onto YOUR feet, what does it show if SOMEONE ELSE (like your wife) is concerned about the order in which socks go onto YOUR feet. Maybe you should worry about your wife's OCD.

Here's one for our OCD brethren!

... For example, we have a panel of 3 light switches at each of the two entrances into the kitchen that control the same lights (overhead, bar, and counter.) I have to have one set all up and one set all down. ....

You got that right.

I have those pesky buggers in the kitchen, dining room and front hallway, not to mention at the top and bottom of the stairs to the second floor and to the basement.

Up is ON!

Down is OFF!

As God intended.;)

I know what you mean - each morning I sit on the bed and look at my shoes and socks trying to decide - should I do sock/sock, shoe/shoe or sock/shoe, sock/shoe and then there's the right/left thing.

And then I have a long, decision laden day ahead :D:D

My very favorite scene from, "All in the Family" is when Archie and Mike are hashing that one out!

I have minor OCD tendencies, enough so that my wife calls me Monk once in a while.

Only thing that gets me is not closing a drawer all the way. Like what happened did you just run out of energy 4 inches from completely closing the drawer?

I know that folks love to make jokes about OCD.

My wife has OCD and we went through a very difficult time in our lives because of OCD. The levels that OCD manifests itself determine how severe your condition impacts your life.

OCD can impact your life by not allowing the person to get out of their house. Imagine your life is so impacted by OCD that you cannot leave the house because you are afraid that you have left a light on, left a water faucet on, checking the appliances.

Many times the pattern of checking the lights, the locks on the door etc... is a specific number. For my wife, she would have to turn the key in groups of three times.

My wife has been unable to get the mail out of our mailbox for over 20 years. She keeps having to check to make sure she hasn't dropped any mail and has closed the mailbox.

I could write a book about the problems, but in reality, the people with OCD have remarkably similar issues. If a person is a "checker" they will check the lights, faucets, locks etc... in the same manner, even though they have never spoken or know other people with OCD.

Some people are afraid of germs. Salad bars, public toilets, shopping carts can be a nightmare.

Some people have difficulty driving. My wife drives her car about 500 miles a year. Really. I have to worry about the gasoline going bad. When my wife drives, it is only to a place she is very familiar with, and it is only by the same route. (We have a 1992 Mercury Sable that is in GREAT condition. Garage kept!) I cannot ride with her when she drives. It drives me crazy; (yes, it is a short drive) because she is so methodical and must do things her way.

Other people with OCD can become obsessed with hair and they pull out their hair.

The thing about OCD is that the people know what they are doing does not make sense. It's not that they believe the light is on, it is that they cannot convince their brain that the light is off.

Many people have OCD manifestations. The issue is do those manifestations impact your life? Does it keep you from working? Does it keep you from being able to leave your house?

This was very hard for us when I was on a ship in the Navy. My ship would leave port for underway time and my wife would not leave the house. She would not get the mail. She would not get the milk off the front porch. We were fortunate that her Mother lived close (that is why we rented a place near her parents house) and every day my mother-in-law would come by and check on my wife. This was the old Navy, not like today's Navy where there was Skype and e-mails etc... I was lucky to have been assigned to a ship with "modern" communications. When the satellite was available, I could make a phone call back to Norfolk. But that was only a couple of times a week.

Eventually, over the past 30 years, she has become more able to to trust me when I say I have checked the doors etc... The only time she really checks stuff is if we are going away for the weekend or even a day trip. Then I have to double check behind her to make sure the water to the toilets and the washing machine have been turned off. The last issue is that the garage door is fully closed before we drive off.

I hope everyone can see that OCD can be a slight annoyance or it can be a life impacting disease. Some people who are anal about stuff are compulsive, but not overly obsessive.

One does not choose to have OCD. One cannot "wish" it away. Psychotherapy were the psychologist tries to for the behavior modification DOES NOT WORK. It only makes it worse.

OCD is cause by a chemical imbalance in the brain. Just as diabetes is a problem with the absorption of insulin, one cannot simply think yourself better and make Diabetes go away.

I hope this explains some of the wide range of issues lumped together as a label of "OCD".

I have a few minor OCD issues too. Like whenever I brush my teeth, I tap my toothbrush on the edge of the sink seven times after rinsing it off. Same thing when rinsing out my coffee cup at work. Seven times on the edge of the sink. Oh yeah, it's a travel mug. Also at work, all of the departments turn in plastic folders of that day's invoices. I have to rearrange the folders so that clear and colored folders are not touching each other in their columns. It has to be clear-color-clear, or color-clear-color. And with my shoes, the top overlapping laces have to be opposite of the other shoe. Both shoes can't have the laces running the same way. Yeah, I'm normal!!

Matt

Thank you for a very thoughtful post.

As with so many other things in life, we joke about things that don't seriously impact us. Most of us have described minor "compulsions" (if they are even that strong) that don't prevent us from living a "normal" life (and what is normal, anyway?) whereas someone like your wife truly suffers from a debilitating condition that she cannot help or control. I'm sure it's no laughing matter for you, and I hope you took no offense from anyone's comments.

Page 2!

How much is OCD vs just habit?
Really people who's lives are affeceted to the extreme like DJINCO's wife are one thing, other "symptoms" to me just seem to be habit.

Everyone has peculiarities that make their day go by, don't affect how their lives go, and in an older time were called organization.

Me, I like my tools set up just so, hate open drawers, and can't abide a dirty desk top.
It's not OCD, just makes my tools easier to find, means I won't run into a open drawer in the dark, and like a clean house.

Why put on a sock and a shoe then the other sock and a shoe instead of a sock and a sock then both shoes? Say what happens if before you get finished and there's a fire and we're standing outside watching the house burn. The ground is going to be wet from the fire hoses, right? Well, I can stand on the one foot wearing a shoe and keep both feet dry. Do it your way, and you've got two soggy feet!

Meathead!:D

You are all confusing OCD with Anal Retentiveness.

(this would be OCD):D

Let me help you out and relieve all of that anxiety... The correct process is Left Sock, Right Sock, Left Shoe, Right Shoe. Then it's compulsory that you take the first step with the left foot. This goes for both walking and running.

Now isn't that better?

How about taking them off? Is it that same order or does the last one on become the first one off?
And you thought the problem was solved.

Have a good friend with OCD. He's a golfer and has bought many very expensive golf shirts at various pro shops from different places. (Think = very expensive)

He GAVE me almost all the golf shirts, with the tags still on them because he stated that if he pulled the tags off and wore them, they would no longer be 'new' - and he likes to wear new shirts.

Yeah - didn't make any sense to me either.

Also -anything he buys in a store will come from the BACK of the assortment in the hopes that no one has touched it.

Oh - almost forgot. We fish together and he would prefer no one catch fish while in his boat. Fish have slime on them, and he does'nt want it in HIS boat!

What I don't understand is why the electrician couldn't wire both sets so that they are both down for off and up for on. Of course, then you'd need some kind of relay so that when you turned one switch up/on, it would turn the corresponding switch up/on as well...same for down/off. Otherwise it would be right back to being out of sync!

Or maybe use round switches that you just press in for on, and press in again to turn them off...that would do it!
