My first handgun is a S&W Model 19 I purchased in 1979...still have it.

Wow, a thread resurrected from 7-1/2 years ago. Technically, I have my first handgun, but not the first one I bought. I have my Dad's Rossi .38 Spl. revolver; He bought it when I was 12 or 13, and I've had it since I was 18.
First handgun I bought was a 6" M19-2, in 1978. I only kept it maybe a year, then sold it and bought a 4" M66. I kept that revolver for 26 years and sold it in a fit of stupidity.

My first handgun I bought was a Ruger .22 Super Single Six, new in the box. That would have been back around 1978 after I got a steady job. I still have it. My first centerfire handgun was a .45 Colt Ruger Blackhawk I bought from Bixler Hardware in Carlisle, PA. I still have that too, despite losing my job back in 2009.
Highway Patrolman Model 28-1 bought brand new in 1973 and it still resides in my safe:
So there are a few 28-1s floating around!

I have my first.. a S&W 422.... AND I have my late father's first as well... a 4 digit serial number Ruger.. just a Ruger.. they only made one gun back then.. and technically it was my grandmother's first gun... it showed up a month before my father's birthday... AND I have my maternal grandfather's one and only shotgun too... I am blessed.

Like Old Tex Mex my first handgun was a Sheridan Knockabout. I have had it since 1956 or '57, when I was 12 or 13.
To be redundant, as OP was with the question, I do still have it, although I haven't shot it for probably 35 years or more. Way too many Smiths, Colts, etc, etc, etc. to get around to the Sheridan.

Fascinating - I think that is only the second 28-1 that is known to exist; there was a pretty big deal string about one a few years back.
My first gun was a Model 58 bought in the late 70s when I was looking at a part time cop job that I did not get. I still have it and it was in fact my first duty weapon.

My first handgun was a H&R 922 that my mom gave me after she decided she didn't want it in her house. I used it as my snake gun while I was fishing. Then I got smart and purchased my 5906 and I still have both.

Browning High Power, purchased in the Fall of 1967 while I was in the Army. In recent years I have fired it regularly with my Ciener Conversion Unit.
I have reconsidered my response. I was gifted a Browning Challenger II by my father for my high school graduation in 1982. I still have it . . .
My first handgun belonged to my mother, I "borrowed" ever now and then, I believe my brother inherited it. I do not have my first handgun and still kick myself for trading it for a Colt Trooper .357. It was a Colt Officer's Target Model in .38 Special, it had King sights but no vent rib.

I was in my final year of college (1979) getting my BA in Police Administration at EKU with plans to join Lexington KY Metro PD upon graduation. (I had done a summer internship working for one of the Deputy Chiefs and he had suggested that I apply as soon as I had my degree work completed.) I did a great deal of research and really wanted a S&W M66 but it was a lot of cash for a struggling college student. I 'settled' for a 4 inch SS Ruger Security Six, as it was still rated highly just not as sexy as the M66. I put up 1/2 the money and my dad kicked in the other half and "we" bought a 4" SS Ruger Security Six. (I was still 3 months shy of my 21st birthday.) I got back to school, only to find out that the on campus range was not open to students, only to LEO's in the state on campus certification program, so I didn't have any place to shoot. Undeterred, over the next couple of months I accumulated all my duty leather so I would be all set to join the PD. Unfortunately, as I got ready to finish my degree, a semester early, Lexington Metro PD put a freeze on hiring and even the Deputy Chief I had interned for could not get me hired. I still have the Ruger 4 inch and added a 2 3/4 incher to go with it.

First handgun was an Iver Johnson Trailsman 66. After two trips back to the factory, it still wouldn't index correctly. Dad then let me trade it for a Ruger Single Six which is what I wanted in the first place. But he had an IJ when he was a kid, so. . . I still have the Single Six. The Iver Johnson was perhaps not designed for the number of rounds that a 14 year old kid put through it between trips to mother ship.
1st pistol that I bought was a new Ruger P89. It had issues, it would not fire reliably. It went back twice, and never got 100% reliable, so it got traded.
IDK what the deal was with that pistol, as the P-Series have a reputation of being well made, reliable guns.
So, no, I don't have the 1st one I ever bought, but for good reason.

I bought a very used Ruger Standard model 22 LR semi-auto pistol in the fall of 1964. This was the original Ruger product. Fixed sights and 9-shot magazines(which don't fit any newer Rugers). I bought it from little old country gun shop. I still have and use it for the occasional pesky varmint.

I never cared much for handguns, being mostly interested in rifles. But eventually I decided I needed a pistol, so I chose a S&W 1006. I still nave it, and it is still my favorite.
My first gun I bought and paid for was a S&W model 10-5 in 1969. $59 with police discount. Still in my safe.

First handgun back in 1971 was a Rohm Model 63 Western Style .22 cal revolver. Cheap. $27.95 brand new. I thought "German made" must be good, LOL.
Second handgun in 1977 was a Ruger New Model Blackhawk 45 Colt/45 ACP convertible. Knowing now what I didn't know then, I hate to even admit I bought the Rohm. Yep, I still have both.
