Does Benadryl kick your butt?

I take two each night to sleep (really). If I don't I'm awake half the night and getting up in the morning is harder the older I get. For allergy problems I used Claritin D (the one they keep behind the counter and you have to sign for). The only problem with Claritin D is it will hype you up. Don't get more than the 12 hour version if you're sensitive to caffeine.

I never in my life had trouble sleeping until the last few months. I'm 61 and wake up about 3 or 4am and can't go back to sleep so I took one Benadryl 2 nights ago and only woke up once for a little while then woke up really refreshed with what felt like a full 8 hours of sleep. I didn't take any the next night and didn't sleep very well so I'm taking one tonight. Never feel groggy the next day.

Bad stuff, makes my heart race. Never touch it.

If I take it during the day I have a really hard time staying awake, but that night I don't sleep good at all. Kinda like I'm dreaming I'm asleep. Does the same thing to my daughter. When I take Sudafed it makes me feel nervous during the day and has the same effect as Benadryl at night.

I got up one day to start mowing at 7:00 AM. Took a couple Benadryl. At 1:00 I was walking thru the house, and thought I'd lay down for a minute, woke up at 7PM.

Since I got a divorce 10 years ago I've not had a bad head ache. I guess mowing didn't cause the head aches after all.

LVS,

Yes it does affect me.

About 30 years ago at work - I took Benadryl for some reason at lunch.

About 4 hours later I woke up with slobber all over my desk where I had fell asleep.

Everyone in the office laughed and said you were sleeping good and we left you alone.

gamboolman....

I have tried it, but it is like a lot of other stuff. It does nothing to me or for me. Same with aspirin, and other pain meds. Can't tell any difference. I have trouble sleeping. Dr prescribed Melatonin. 2 nothing 4 nothing, 6 nothing 8 and its all the same sleep from 10-4 and wake up and either lay there in the dark or get up and get started. 3 Benadryl and I wake up at 4 with dry mouth and throat.

Most stuff just don't do much to me or for me.

Anyone try the cannabis gummy bears? One friend takes a 5mg gummy a few times a week and said it helped his sleep a lot when nothing else would. I've never in my life had sleep issues but at 61 I'm waking up every night after 4 hours or so and I'm ready to try the something.

Been taking 2 tabs every night for years.
No side effects and,
frankly, they don't help my sinuses much anymore.

Bob

My situation, with, I believe, ANY OTC, is that the effect lessons over time.

I had a VERY high muscle use job between age 50 and 60,,
I found that any NSAID pain reliever became non-effective after 2-3 months,
SO, I had to rotate, every 2-3 months, to a different type NSAID.

It was AMAZING, Tylenol quit working,, switch to Aleve for 2 months,, then Tylenol would work again.

The same with Benadryl ,,
use it as a sleep remedy,, for three months, then, it would taper off and quit effecting my sleep,, at all.

My wife uses them for her arthritis, they have an added benefit of helping her sleep.

After much research I concluded that neither Benadryl nor cannabis do anything for my chronic(no pun intended) insomnia.

Some of us are wired differently.

I don't know it the feeling I get is called "high"or not but I don't like it. I took it once a long time ago and I can't imagine a situation or circumstance where I might take it again. That is some evil stuff.

I take a generic Zyrtec (ceterizine) every morning for allergy symptom relief. I get them from amazon around $14 for 365 tablets. If it gets really bad despite the ceterizine I will take a generic benadryl, but only at night. If I take it in the day time I will be useless due to extreme drowsiness.

I use ceterizine before an allergy issue for a preventative.

I take Wal-Act D for an allergy attack. Its Walgeens brand and you must sign for it.
It works very quick and really stops most severe attacks in under an hour if combined with a hot shower. It will make you sleepy though, but its worth it!!

Benadryl does work on my allergies better than anything else. The OTC other ones do little to nothing, like Claratin, Zyrtec, etc, and as I said, Actifed knocks me out like morphine does to most people. Unfortunately for me, my late grandmother and mother, morphine intravenously does absolutely nothing. I had three hits of it after surgery and got nothing but a cold arm as it went into the IV. But they gave me a Percocet, and in 20 minutes I was out for 4 hours. I took Percocets for shoulder pain for over 6 months, and stopped cold turkey without telling the doctor. It was like I stopped taking breath mints. No withdrawal, nothing but an easier time going to the bathroom a couple of days later. The doctor looked at me like I was an alien. Besides apparently not able to become addicted to opiates, my grandmother, mother, and I all shared a huge tolerance of it orally. I took one of mom's 60 Oxycontin, thinking incorrectly it was a 20, and was actually able to function fairly well, and cooked myself a nice dinner while zombied out. Later on, when I had a kidney stone, I took a 40 and had a nice buzz going. I'm even weird on kidney stones, they for the most part, don't hurt all that much, the gout is 10X worse. The one I took the Oxycontin for was the worst one, and it wasn't pleasant, but nowhere near the horrible thing friends have gone through with them. The doctor said, "You have no idea how lucky you are!".

Doesnt really kick my butt but does make me feel super relaxed.

When I first got into skeet shooting, I could never shoot a 25. I would be so close, shot a lot of 24s, but no 25. One Saturday during allergy season my buddy said lets go shoot skeet, nothing else to do. I had just taken a Benadryl. Wasn't impaired but just really relaxed. Shot 2 lines of skeet. 50/50. Was just relaxed enough not to over think the targets I guess.
