No intent to be political, but add some context to the issue:
There have been a series of arrests of Chinese nationals for espionage due to domestic U.S. military bases.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer blocked a bipartisan effort, led by Senator Gary Peters, last December to pass a Biden Administration package to expand domestic drone detection and interception authority as part of the Transportation Reauthorization Act.

As for shooting stuff flying over in New Jersey, please don’t. It is a federal crime (everywhere in the U.S.) and will earn state charges in many states.

Stories like this always get folks animated, with all sorts of conspiracy theories churning all over the web, but the bottom line is that a drone -- any drone -- is an aircraft, whether you or I or Uncle Sam can identify it or not, and it's illegal under federal law to shoot down an aircraft.

Now, just to add my 2 cents' worth to the debate...if I were a bettin' man, I'd wager that Uncle Sam knows what's going on, but for one reason or another, can't or won't inform the public. Are we in any danger? Only from self-aggrandizing public figures and pot-stirrers...

The things are lit up like neon signs when they don't have to be.
For years now, about $30 would get you a starlight capable FPV camera. I've operated drones with such cameras after dark with impunity, nearly matching the daytime flight experience.
what we have here is probably more of a hoax flavored stunt preying on public ignorance and fueled by a media industry that'd sensationalize a tube of toothpaste.

Meanwhile some cellar dweller is likely laughing his backside off from his moms basement at all this publicity.

They can carry explosives, spread ricin powder, biological weapons, monitor communications, military and civilian, etc.
Same for the chinese balloons from several months back.

That being the case the US Navy needs to be in constant surveillance and shoot the suckers down as soon as they go airborne. No threat to anyone on land then.

How about DARPA investing the time and money to develop a big butterfly net in order to capture these offending drones.

This would be both stealthy and an eco-friendly device that would not harm the environment, the drone by splattering pieces over several acres or alarming the general public.

Once caught, we could reverse engineer it and/or, assuming it is a smart device, interrogate it concerning its intention.

If they are truly coming from the east, there must be some sort of "base" out there where they can refuel / recharge. Locate that and then capture or destroy it all at once.
