I don't carry a knife. I've thought about it, but so far I haven't decided to.

The main reason is that I wouldn't know how to use it for self-defense, and would probably get myself cut with my own weapon if I tried it with someone who knew how to knife-fight.

So, I'm strictly a handgun guy for self-defense. That doesn't keep me from wondering, though, what it would be like to be attacked by someone with a knife.

Have you ever been stabbed or slashed in a self-defense encounter? What is it like? If I'm faced with it, what advice do you have if I'm not able to defend myself with my handgun? (I'll look up defensive techniques on my own, so no need to be too specific in your answer; I'm just looking for whatever common sense advice you have.)

Thanks for any enlightenment.

This is the only one I have. And I have never been attacked by someone with a knife. But if I was, mine would be the one I would want them to attack me with. :D

Slashed in the side in an attempted robbery in a the parking lot of a C&W bar/dance hall back in 1977. Payday night. He had a knife, I grabbed a tire iron off the floor of my truck. I have a 6" scar. He got the tire iron planted upside his head. When I left the parking lot he was sleeping and bleeding on the pavement. One of my buddies, another medic, sewed me up. that way I did not have to explain a knife wound at the base ER. The sewing hurt more than the original cut.

Not ever in SD despite the fact that I lived in Robeson county for 9 years . :D

I do carry one if not two knives most of the time but I use them so much day to day that I don't think of them as "weapons", I'd use them if that's what was at hand though.

One big thing about knife fights is no one normally wins, one person just gets cut less. Another thing is our knife laws are crazy like Fayetteville has a 3" blade limit so that makes WM and other store sellers of "illegal" kitchen knifes and NC only really has case laws so they're kind of "fuzy".

I really like Spiderco and C.R.K.T knives and Cold Steel is OK.

EDIT: GEODUCK beat me to it, curse my stupid slow typing. :D

I got into a fist fight as a kid in a really bad neighborhood, next thing I knew he stabbed me in my hand/knuckles and ran. It was right down to the bone.. it hurt like hell.

On another occurrence I stabbed myself by accident. Buried a 4" blade to the handle in my thigh. Bled pretty bad, finished the job I was on and received some stitches at the ER and limped for a couple days.

Know the "21 foot rule"........ someone charging you can cover 21 feet in the in the time it takes most people to draw from a holster.........add reaction time; this can be real long for the " this isn't happening to me is it!!!" crowd.

Another rule; a knife never runs out of bullets........

Advice? Run like hell!

Advice? Run like hell!

Reminds me of an old Richard Pryor bit, when he is riffing on how stupid people can be when confronted with an armed assailant, and how they feel the need to stand and fight.

"If he pulls a knife out of his pocket, and all you can pull out is a hand with some skin on it, then you need to RUN!!!!"

Having had a little training in this area, and hoping others with similar training weigh in, best advice I can offer is to get the heck out of the situation quick. Run. If that's not an option, know that knife wounds need momentum behind them. Your best bet is to get in close, inside the BG's "arc". Get your fingers in his eyes. This is all VERY subjective. A little training goes a leg way.

In 1960, I was 16 years old. Had been in Juarez, Mex with some buddies from H.S. football team, partying. Crossed back over the old bridge back into the U.S. side when me and best friend were attacked by three punks trying to rob us. My buddy and I were both pretty well intoxicated. We put up a heck of a fight. I had one guy on the ground, pounding away. Must of had tunnel vision, cause one of the other guys came up behind me and stabbed me in the lower back. I was so drunk that I didn't feel a thing. My buddy knocked the guy off me and they all three ran. Neither one of us knew that I had been stabbed. We walked to the downtown Plaza and caught the last bus home. When I got home, I snuck in the house, went to take a leak and felt something warm run down the back of my leg. I felt behind me and came away with a bloody hand. Too scared to tell my folks, I wrapped a towel around myself to control the bleeding and went to bed. The next morning, I hid the bloody towel and sheets. When I examined myself in the mirror, I could see an inch long wound right over my right hip bone. If the stab had been an inch higher, I wouldn't be here. That was the last time I ever drink so much that someone else had control of my life.

I never had a defensive scars from a knife, but I couldn't count how many deep cuts I have received over the years. While escorting deer and elk hunters, I was stabbed in the thigh,to the hilt, with a 4" Buck 110. When others saw the knife sticking out of my leg, they had me stand there till the could get a camera. I never did get to see the pictures. Never did get around to sewing it up. Just added it to the other scars on my leg. How many in here have been gored by a deer? How many have been gored twice? That left thigh of mine looks like a battleground with the added compound fracture scar. When I took the knife thrust I cant say I felt anymore pain than a sharp pinch would inflict. However the numerous bad cuts I have receiver did hurt but not disabling. Oh forgot about the screwdriver thrust completely through my palm. That didn't have much pain either.

Have you ever been stabbed or slashed. . . .?

Only by a surgeon during a six hour surgery which left a really mean looking scar about 9 inches long, give or take, on the right side of my neck. He got all of it, I am still breathing, and I didn't even have to draw my gun in self-defense.

The long chain of staples after the fact made for some good stories, though!

:)
