I have been looking for one for six months and today I got it. A little bird told me that cabals got 4 in and I got the 3rd. I'm thinking about giving my wife my kahr cm9.we will see.

I would look at the kahr cm9 before I would get the ruger But that's just personal thought.

I vote to wait for the Shield. I know some people have been on waiting lists for 6 months or more. When they got tired of waiting they got creative and found one within a week. There was another thread on this issue, I'm sorry I don't remember the title. What some are doing is giving up on their local LGS and checking with LGS's all over the country. If a shop in another state or town gets one or a few in they will ship it to you. You just have to decide just how much work you want to put into it. Check the websites of the larger chains even if they are out of state. I got lucky getting mine, the last of 60 of the first batch to come in to Tampa and this was at 2pm the first day. I have only seen three others since then. Good luck to you.

Hey at least you've got a chance to find in another state and buy it...
I have to look for a CA approved model which is like looking for Bigfoot or UFO....
There are reports of them being seen here and there but nobody can put their finger on one!

I wonder why is this shortage about Shield?

Despite some people claim here, I don't think this shortage is because of the current gun ban craze.

Simply the "Shield" became suddenly the most popular CC gun and S&W can't keep up the production to meet the demand.

I suspect the popularity of this gun even surprised the hell out of S&W.

They just caught unprepared...

Well, good luck to you in your Shield hunt...

I must have got lucky i ordered 2 of the 9mm 3days after Christmas it only took a month to get them now their saying 6 to 8 months for them

Go to the s&w website and use the local dealer finder and start at the top of the list and call every number.

This is what I did. None of the stores had one, then I called one of the pawn stores listed and they had 50!

yAnother thing you can do is if you are on Facebook "like" every gun shop that you can find even if it is a place you don't normally shop. A lot of shops will advertise that the got Shields in. This is how I found mine. Just last week a LGS that I don't shop at posted they had twelve 9mm Shields in stock

Just keep looking, they are out there...it just is gonna require some extra legwork on your part thats all

Springfield Armory will be releasing their XD-S in 9mm in late spring. If it is anywhere near as good as my XD-S .45 they will have a winner on their hands. I'd wait for that if you plan on giving up on a Shield.

Shield has had some design/QC issues, a couple fairly serious. Guys have been posting responses from S&W legal dept., which tells me it's possible they halted production to sort through some issues, reviewed specs with vendors for their drift pins, etc.

I will never buy a used Shield.

I will never buy a 40 S&W Shield.

I ordered two new 9mm Shields before Christmas and picked them up this week. The test shells are marked January 13th, so hopefully mine are good to go.

I you end up with a recent production Shield, feel good that maybe you avoided some of the growing pains the S&W is went through with the model.
The Walther P99 could be worth a look for you.

I bought one of the first ones out last April and have had ZERO problems. It's had the living daylights shot out of it from me shooting it and letting other people see how they liked it. It's had about everything shot through it.

I ordered one from my LGS as soon as I found out about them right around the Shot Show time last year. It was a no brainer that it was going to be one hot handgun at that size.

I hear you. the reason I ordered two was because how well my brother's shot, the mrs. liked it, so I ordered up two of them. His Bodyguard, on the other hand, is probably due for a second return to S&W. But it's well documented that the following have occured with the Shield and S&W has formally, at least to the customers, addressed most of these issues:

1 - magazines dropping during the course of fire. S&W is replacing magazine catches.

2 - The drift pin, forward of the trigger, has been known to walk out. S&W states that the vendor went off spec, and they are replacing the pins for customers.

3 - Damaged rear of a slide, from normal operation, posted on this forum. I can't imagine ammo, etc., could have caused that. It seems to be making contact where it shouldn't.

4 - The worst was just posted. A 40 S&W Shield that most likely had hot, reloaded, Glaser rounds put in it. While I agree these aren't made for hot loads, the darn gun blew up in his hand. Honestly, I will never buy a 40 S&W caliber polymer gun. I know thousands are working out just fine, but the 40 seems too hot for polymer, Glock was the first to experience that. plus, I don't like the way a polymer-framed handles the recoil of a 40. The M&P full size is probably the most comfortable 40 I've shot, but most compacts, like the G23, just aren't fun for me to shoot.
