Just got my first Highway Patrolman and am pretty pleased. 4” Model 28-2. The seller told me this was her father’s revolver and that it was a gift from a friend of his that was a long time S&W employee and had it refinished by the factory in Bright Blue.

I can’t corroborate that and I’m not sure even a letter would prove such. I don’t really care about the provenance because it’s a good looking finish regardless and I got it for less than $1K. I had these grips already and I think it’s a handsome N frame that is quite shoot-worthy. Attractive AND shootable is my personal sweet spot.

Very pleased with my purchase.

Great looking revolver and grips. I still have my 1978 that I bought new. When I bought it I wanted a 27 but just couldn’t see paying the difference but have never regretted the decision to get my 28. I bought a new Python around 1980?? and sold my M28 to my brother. He had it for a few years but wound up buying it back. Now I don’t think there’s any way is part with it. I may swap out the grips one day for some custom targets but haven’t come across what I’m looking for yet.

That's a good looking 28. I have 4" "S" prefix 28-2 I bought years ago that was a Deputy's duty gun. It had been refinished some time in its life and the S&W insignia had almost been polished off the side plate. The action was loose, and the finish had a bunch of "character" (Wish I had kept the before pictures). This was definitely not one that had been carried a lot a shot a little; it had plenty of both. Paid $350 for it and eventually sent it to S&W with a new target hammer/trigger for an overhaul. $305 later (including return shipping!), it was returned with the ignition system/action overhauled, high polish finish (Including restamping the side plate insignia), and a red ramp white outline sight set up. The current grips are some black washer targets that had a spa day with Curt Harlow. It's my poor man's Model 27.

I'd be proud to own that set up!

Beautiful!

As would I. That's a nice one for sure. Those stocks are just beautiful.

You want to get a "show and tell" going on here? Bring up the Model 28. I remember the first one I ever saw, in the display case at a G.E.M. store in Richmond, Va., when I was about 21 or so. I remember the price being $129.00, but as I've gotten older I realize that I remember a lot of things being $129.00, so that's probably not right. It didn't matter. It might as well have been a million dollars. I had about as much chance of affording that as I did anything else back then. I did keep going back and looking though. :D

I've owned several over the years, but I don't think I really appreciated them until this most recent one. Man, does this gun shoot.

I keep telling myself I don't a 4" one. It's not working.

Some very nice 28s here. I still need to scratch that four inch itch. Here’s my six inch 28-2 from 1972 I bought about 8 years ago. Has a bit of finish wear and came with some Pachmayrs. I replaced those with these Altamonts I refinished.

It is possible that it was stamped under the grips, but my guess is that the re-blue was done "off the books."

Looks aren't everything. This 1967 28-2 has some great patina and shows its age, but it's the tightest S&W revolver I have ever owned or handled. The two first year Highway Patrolman look better, but the '67 would be the last to go. The OP's does look nice, but I'm not a fan of refinished guns.

Sodacan, those are some beauties the two 5 screw HP's. I notice the 4" barrel has the two front sight pins that look proud. I've never seen that on any Hp or model 28. Even when flush fit you usually have to really look to see those pins. Can we see a close up of that front sight please? Thanks

OOoh, that's NICE! I'm Jealous!

HP's have always been my favorite S&W. I collected them for a bit, having a 4 inch and 6 inch from each dash change (except -1, of course. Still looking for one!). I'm down to 2 now, one was my dad's and another just a generic 4 inch from the early 70's.

Congrats on your fine HP!
