I am looking to buy my first Revolver. I would like to ask some thoughts. I shot a 686 6" loaded with 38s Loved It. I almost bought one on the spot and then thought lets go back and look around and see what the other options are. Went to SW web site tons of options but not a lot of info but tech specs. but tons of models. It will be used for Bullseye, The SSR seemed really nice but it did not come in the 6" Barrel. Any info on what the differences are or what you would recommended would be great. Yes I know I could go back and read the forum for days but I would like to buy one and will buy the 686 and less I can find out I can do better in the same type of gun and feel. Did I mention i loved that gun.

I have a 686PP that will drive tacks. It is the best revolver for Bullseye out of the line-up to pick from. The power port works nice on recover.

My first revolver (my first handgun!) was a 686 6". I still have it and I still love it. Obviously, it's way to big for concealed carry. But, in every other respect it's damn near perfect. It handles nearly all magnum loads with ease, and has only slightly more perceived recoil than a .22 with .38 special rounds. It is amazingly accurate. I'd recommend it without hesitation for anyone looking for that first revolver. As a second choice, I'd recommend a 617, either in 6" or 4", because it replicates the feel of a 686 in every way, yet fires .22 lr ammunition which can be had commercially for about 1/15 the price of .38 special.

I forgot to mention that I also own a 686SSR and I love that one, too. It's a bit lighter than the 686 (no full underlugged barrel) and it comes with a pretty nice factory trigger job. But, it's also significantly more expensive (about $150 more) than the "regular" 686 and, in retrospect, I'm not sure you get all that much more for the higher price.

Why not remove the "8" and look at the "66". I have a 66-1, 357 with a 6" barrel and loaded with target sights and all. You can find them out there for as little as $400.

My first handgun was a nickle 586 with a 6-inch barrel that I bought in 1982. I would suggest a 686. Can't go wrong with any of the 686 choices you have. Personally, I like the 6-inch barrel most.

I bought a 6" barreled 686 when they first came out. It was an amazingly accurate gun and like a fool, I sold it when I quit hunting. I decided to replace it, but wanted one with the 4 position adjustable front sight. It took a few years, but I got one with the adjustable front sight, and a very nice Leopold scope and rings. Unfortunately, the seller did not retain the rear sights, but this pistol will SHOOT. For my son's 10th birthday, I took him to the range and let him shoot .22LR out of a pistol and rifle (red dot sights on both). Then, I let him shoot the 686 with very mild .38 Special wadcutters off of a rest. He still talks about making "Mickey Mouse" 3 shot groups with that pistol.

Best of luck,

Dave

My 686 is the most accurate gun i have.more accurate than my kimber or dan wesson.

Well got the 686

Now I do not want to start another thread but I would like to get some wood or exotic finger grove grips who makes the best and are then any that do custom work.

I have only shot a rental twice and this one once and I would agree my Kimber is good but this thing is money and I am knew to revolvers

The 686 with a 6" barrel is one of the most versatile handguns. Loaded with 38 wadcutters it is a very mild shooting highly accurate target gun. Loaded with full house 357 magnums, it can take deer sized game. The full lug barrel gives added weight and helps absorb the felt recoil, and in one handed bullseye it steadies the aim. Being stainless, it is very easy to maintain. A little Mothers Mag Polish can clean it up like new every time you shoot it.

Here's a pic of mine.

Congratulations on that purchase! You'll never regret it. Now, as for wooden grips, if you like the feel of the Hogue rubbers on your new gun, Hogue makes very nice wooden grips with a similar shape. I have a set for my 686, but, frankly, after using them for a year or so, I switched back to the rubber grips because they're a little bit thinner and I get a slightly better feel shooting with them. There are literally hundreds of other options out there, and if you keep watching the great photos that are posted on this forum for just a couple of weeks I'm sure you'll get dozens of good ideas.

My first revovler was NOT a K-22, but it should have been. Learn the fundamentals with the 22. The current version, the 617 is a great gun.

Couldn't agree more with S. McCarver. My first handgun was an H&R 999 top-break .22 revolver. I had to have it as this was the first handgun I ever fired as a youngster. It was a lot of fun, but it wasn't a good gun as a learning platform for revolvers (heavy trigger, poor sights). It took me years, but I finally traded it in for a K-22 with the 8 3/8" barrel. That K-22 from a rest was like shooting a rifle. Buy a good quality .22 revolver and I know you'll be happy.

Regards,

Dave
