first time gun owner with m&p 15-22, should have gone with .223 instead?

That's funny, the .223 AR is the original "Mouse Gun". When you're serious about home defense you'll get a shotgun and put buckshot in it! As for the .223, it's a novelty that's too loud to have fun with. Keep the .22. It's more practical, and you'll use it a lot more. I'd get rid of my .223 before my .22!

And once you've gotten some real training with it you'll figure out the shotgun isn't all unicorn hairs and fairy dust and get an AR in 5.56mm.

Shotguns are useful tools, don't get me wrong. I'm also GOOD with a shotgun. An AR is a better SD weapon. There is simply less to go wrong with it.

oldest guns i own are 22/22m revolver and a ruger rifle and would not feel undergun or uncomfortable using them to draw down on anyone,,the gun doessn't make the man,,ya ready to lay down for your family is qualification enough..

I can tell how much by your user name "ARGH"...:)

i will sell some 25 round mags from the 15-22 and a couple of pmags i was lucky enough to find to help offset the inflated price and bring down the financial pain. my goal is to try to get the purchase price down to about msrp of the gun. the mags are going for about $100 a piece, especially the 15-22 mags since they will not be made any longer.

at the end of the day, i believe it to be all about shot placement.

i brought the 15-22 to a local range that allowed double tap and rapid fire. i onloaded a full clip in a few seconds on the paper target at 45 feet. all the shots hit, center mass. i do not think the same can be achieved with the .223. i never fired one so maybe i am wrong.

the assault weapon ban frenzy made me cave in on the .223. hell, even my 15-22 will be illegal if anything like NY law gets adopted.

keep the 15-22,like stated before here, you will get more range time and put more lead down range.the 15-22s looks will be intimidating to and intruder especially in a dark house.i for one have a taurus 9mm with JHPs loaded and a flashlight and laser sight for my primary home defence and the .22 for the back up.just so you know i was concerned about the rounds from the .22 not being effective against an intruder but if you learn how to shoot it and are accurate than you WILL stop a home invader with the 15-22.if i have to use my .22 to defend,i plan on aiming for the upper body and or head.i am outfitting my 15-22 with an illuminated scope and bipod for long range shooting at the range, and a flashlight and laser sight for shooting in darker situations like a night time home defence situation.to me the laser alone adds an intimidation factor just because the intruder can see the dot on his chest and knows he is in a bad position at that point.BTW you can get .22lr bullets that have the pointed tip like a .223 does.i found them online when i was looking at different ammo.hell i even found tracer rounds for it

also why do you say the 15-22 mags wont be made anymore?no law has been passed yet,i can get mags at my store right now and they sure dont cost me $100 a piece.im sure someone will buy those mags from you but i can get them for around $20 right now from my LGS.

the 38 special is my primary home defense gun with +p hollow points. with the revolver i dont have to worry about safety switches or things jamming. the rifles are the secondary guns or the guns the wife will grab while i engage the intruder. she will most likely go with the 15-22, i am betting.

S&W said they no longer will make them until they know what happens in washington.

if you can get the 25 round mags for msrp buy them all up and make at least 400% profit! that is what they are going for at gunbroker.com.

Hello. Found the 15-22 forum and had to join- lots of great information and knowledgeable people involved here, which is nice to see considering some of the sites I've visited recently.

Bought my 15-22 about a year ago and can honestly say that it's absolutely the favorite rifle in my "collection" of three. The gun is accurate as hell, ammo is (normally) cheap and there's also the fact that the thing really looks cool and can be dressed-up like any AR. I think we can pretty much alllllll agree that the stopping power of the .22 ain't quite what you're ideally looking for in HD. I think I'd prefer my XDM 45 with a nice hollow-point or my shotgun for that. Add a blinding flashlight to the rail on the XDM plus 13 rounds... that'll work.

So, can we all agree on the following: there's nothing "unmanly" about the rifle. The 15-22 is not ideal for HD but it's better than absolutely nothing. The 15-22 is a great gun (it really is). Get some stopping power for HD. Practice the daylights out of whatever you get. Don't listen to everything you read online.

BTW- just curious... anyone have knowledge whether the 15-22 would be considered an "assault weapon" under our fearless leader's new proposals to Congress? Can't seem to find a definition in a quick google search.
