Folding sights for M&P 10

First time ive ever owned a rifle - and im looking to put on a set of backup sights that can fold down. I still have the stock gas block, and will be using a trs25 bushnell reddot for the time being.

Anyone have any tips on what would be some great sights to buy that would work well with this combo?

Well, yes and no.

You DO NOT want the Magpul polymer sights if you will be mounting them on a gas block, and Magpul only recently announced their all-metal sights so availability will be limited if at all.

A tried and true product is Troy, but there are also a few other makes which I wouldn't kick out of bed.

Due to heat issues? I haven't had a problem with mine, yet.

If you're not going through mag dumps, you MAY be okay, but I'm just going with Magpul's own warning...

NOTE: Cannot be mounted to a railed gas block due to excess heat issues.

High temps and plastic don't play nice. Just sayin'. Especially when there are other options available.

If you got those for free, then gird yourself for some sticker shock. Buying precision USA-made steel buis is a just-bend-over proposition.

iron sight gotcha!

besides not putting a plastic sight on the gas block there is one other gotcha to watch for. when you pick out a pair of sights be sure you know if they are for a setup where the rails are at the same height, or for use on a gasblock that is lower than the receiver rail.

The gas blocks for the S&W rifles are all receiver rail height.

they may be if you have a factory railed gas block. but here in mass the only m&p-15 sport model i could get had a fixed front sight, not a railed block... the block i got to replace it was short so i have to have the taller front sight. unfortunately i bought the wrong pair to start with... fortunately they fit the m&p-10.

Thats the same setup I use on my M&P15.

I'm going to try something a little different on the second rifle since I already have optics on the first one. When things are happening quick and I'm in a hurry (coyote, varmint, bear too close to the house) I always seem to grab for a rifle with iron sites. Habit I guess since I'm comfortable with clunky irons.

I found a set of used LMT fixed sights to try first. I'm also looking for an Armalite AR10 carry handle to try with the LMT fixed front.

Might as well try a little bit of everything. That's how the information get's out in the wild. =)
