I was this close to asking a really noviced question about converting the 15-22 into the .223,,,,glad i read the post first,,if you guys really want to pee your britches I will post my question,,but im gonna have to start carrying some sort of pink weapon to match my panties......

Had the AR 1st Purchased new in 86 Colt H-Bar,Went with the 15-22 for several reasons Collaspable Stock & Weight were the main reasons as it is much easier for My 12 old son to handle.

I got a CMMG unit for my M4gery about 18 months ago. Have had occasional extraction issues with it off and on (Federal AE 38 gr. HVHP ammo). It was a good practice setup and accuracy good enough for drills. Normally I did a lot of single shot drills with it but the last time out I did quite a few multiple shot drills. Also had a number of failures to feed, which tends to distract you while you clear it (no hold-open feature with this unit). No 5.56 rounds fired, and I cleaned the rifle after every outing. Still not sure but in cleaning the bore, I found that I had a bulged barrel. Still not sure exactly what happened but I am now waiting for a new barrel so I can install it. A real first for fifty years of shooting and various instructors' ratings.

The CMMG unit is now on the surplus list, and I will be getting a 15-22 for a practice .22 LR. Everyone seems to be pleased with them, and the accuracy and reliability seem very good. I will have to put an optic on it to match the 5.56, but then I should be good to go.

Not sure what the exact moral is here, but I view AR Atchisson-type conversion units as an iffy expedient. Better something purpose-built with a distinctly better track record. S&W seems to have produced it.

OK, I've had probably a dozen personal AR15s and carried the M16/M4 for years. Now that Uncle Sam isn't buying my ammo I need an inexpensive way to maintain trigger proficiency.

Been thru the "dedicated upper" and a couple of subcaliber inserts. Subcaliber works OK in 1/12 twist barrels but only at very short ranges with 1/7 twist. None of these were as reliable as my M&P15-22

A good 1/12 twist dedicated upper runs at least $400. The M&P15-22 runs about $400 and I can shoot one, the other, or both almost literally at the same time.

These are set up the same for sights, grips, trigger, etc. Only substantive difference is caliber.

Personally, I like having both a dedicated 22lr "black gun" to go with the Stag Arms 2t. That's why I bought the stag in the first place; it's one of the few manufacturers who actually machine and make their AR's from the ground up so their tolerances are real tight.

Plus, buyin more firearms is always fun...hehehe.

I would opt for an M&P 15-22 rather than using a conversion kit. For almost the same price you get a new firearm.

I've got 3 AR style rifles, 1 Oly CAR15 and 2 Colt's. I also have a Military Armament Corporation, Atchisson M16/AR15 .22 LR Conversion Device. I've never used it in the Colt rifles but have used it a BUNCH in the Olympic. I picked my conversion kit up on *bay (That will tell you how long ago I got this) for $125.00. Mine runs like a top and I have never had a FTF/FTE with it in place. My only complaint is that I have never been able to find an extra RELIABLE magazine so I am stuck reloading the same magazine after 16 rounds fired.

Gsg makes a dedicated ak-47-22 if that answers your ? But I don't know of any drop in kits for them because the barrels r a different caliber

Ive got 3 ar-15s and a 15-22 and to be honest id never put a convertion kit in any of them. Im sure you have learned bythis time that rimfire ammo is nasty. My ar-15s stay clean for the most part.. There is nothing worse then trying to get lead build up out of a gas tube. The complete uppers are fine but fot that kind of coin you could just have a 15-22. To each his own but if you bought a dedicated upper it would not be long before you had a lower for it.

Since I own the m&p 15-22 I have high respect for it and S&W customer service. I really did not know what brand of ar-15 I wanted. If I buy a AR-15 it is going to be a S&W M&P 15 Moe. I know S&W will stand behind it. I see one in the near future.
