Hello -
Last Tuesday, I decided to check out a local farm supply store which also sells firearms. Spent about 15 minutes perusing the showcases with no luck. Plenty of Glocks, SIGs, and other semi-autos but nothing really interesting to be seen. As I was preparing to leave I noticed a heavy barrel of a revolver in one of the showcases on the bottom row and pretty well hidden which I hadn't noticed previously. I asked the clerk to bring the piece out for further inspection. She did so and handed me an S&W 58 which I certainly was surprised to see. The revolver had good blueing with some scratches and holster wear. It seemed tight mechanically and was wearing set of PC Magnas. It had an S series serial number and was tagged with a price of $450 with no box/papers or tools. It was all I could do to keep from shouting when I said I'd take it. Traded a SIG which I had brought with me as trade bait. Upon further inspection at home, the 58 was found to have grips numbered to the gun and a s/n of S2583XX, a fairly early produced 41 Magnum revolver.

It seems like a bunch of 58's have been "unearthed" lately and hopefully this trend will continue! I've looked for one for several years since I sold a Nickel Model 57 6" in a fit of temporary insanity. Will post some pictures soon (hopefully). If you've been searching unsuccessfully for a 58, keep searching as you never know..................

Welcome to the 58 club!
They sure shoot sweet and have just the right heft. Mine is in similar serial range and no complaints. My favorite revolver.:)

A hearty welcome from me also! The .41 mag is my favorite caliber followed closely by a .22:). Gotta love a find like that. Sound like the good old days.

Just picked up a 58 myself.
It loves 210 g.r LSWC's over 8 gains of Unique. Very accurate and gentle to the hand.

Nice find. At that price I don't believe I'd have been able to keep from shouting. You must have more self control than me.

Great gun at a better price. Deals, I mean steals do exist. I got mine for same price a few years back from an estate sale. Joe

Welcome to the unofficial 58 club!

We should have out own sticky...like the highway patrolman's do...I have 2 and love them...I never thought that I would like a M&P style so much, but I do....and it is catching! :D

Congrats.. The grips are almost worth that price. You done good.

Pictures! We need pictures!

E'gads man, good find! I've been looking for a shooter 58 for years now, gotta get me one of those farm stores.

The more I watch the sites, the more I'm realizing that the old timers who bought those firearms origianlly and squirreled thema away are passing on now. They are going to children and grandchildren who have no idea, or desire to learn, what they have.
It's easier to just trade it or sell it than to learn or appreciate what has been left them.
Tough luck for them, good luck for us.

Oh yeah. Post the pictures!!

58 Conversion ???

S.S.

You are a man after my own hearts desrie. Do you know who did the conversion on your .44 cal. Model 58?

I have no idea who did the conversion, this 58 was a .44 when I got it. The work is well done even if the caliber marking is not well executed. In my view, the only thing once could do to improve the 58 is to change it's caliber.... While the .41 Magnum is a fine cartridge, I appreciate the flexibility of the .44 chambering.

Back in the early 90s I had a gunsmith friend of mine wanting a fixed sighted 44 mag. He knew I had a couple of 58s and one went to him. He did his magic with a 29 and the 58 and created two hybrids. Course had to build up a new front sight on that HB for the adjustable sights. Here's my last 58.

When I was in Germany 88-90', I would take my Lee Handloader kit and tap out .41 Mag rounds during team training sometimes in the gastehaus or my ruck in the Alps! Times have changed.

I might get banned for singing the praises of a 58, but it is without a doubt my favorite handgun. Loaded down for two legged critters, loaded up for the big stuff...
nothing to bend or break...
The ultimate revolver....

I got your back Sheriff. My ol 58 and I been to the mountain. It is the last gun that I will part with.

They don't make a better fightin' gun.

I have seen some fixed sight 44 mags on this site, never in person. If I could get my hands on one I would covet it as well.....
