Found a 2" model 12-2 at a local shop yesterday in excellent, like new condition. Asking is $425 but can get if to $400. Don't know about box and docs. Forgot to ask. For those that have them, how do you like them?

If it's really like new, sounds like a fair price. Be sure to check for cracked frame under the barrel and original grips (thin frame). I picked up a 4" round butt a while ago in unfired condition. It's still living in the safe. Maybe it will follow me to the range on of these days. That 2" should make a great carry gun.

Model 12's are a joy to carry and easier to shoot than any j frame. Inspect them carefully for the cracks already mentioned. A few were over torqued during assembly causing the cracks. for the ones that were assembled correctly-they are not fragile and will hold up to lots of shooting. One member had a great thread about shooting 5000 rounds of +P ammo through his model 12.

I feed mine wadcutters and find it comfortable to shoot.

The factory original grips bring a nice premium because they are a little thinner that standard K frame grips.

400 sounds like a fair price-please post pics after you bring it home.

I wish one could get a M12, RB, with a 3" barrel, preferably a heavy barrel. I prefer the looks of the HB, which is not really objective. I'd try to put a more visible sight on it, since I am old. A bobbed hammer would really be cool. A 2" RB with a better front sight and opened up rear trough might be really practical for my wife.

When we're talking about nice pre-lock S&Ws, I don't know how much fairer $425 +/- can be. Anyone expecting $250-$350 is dreaming, or just plain lucky. A clean Model 12 is a wonderful carry snub, and well worth $400-$500, box or not.

My P.D. marked Model 12

Although in my parts it's illegal for the public to conceal and carry any firearm, the Model 12 would be an excellent candidate for doing so if allowed. I've shot mine quite a bit with 148g wadcutters. Mine shoots to point of aim at 15 yards and is fairly light on recoil with this load. The only complaint I would have is with the black finish on the frame as it seems to wear quite quickly if you use it in a holster. A nice snubbie and a good deal in the $400 range.

The cracked frame issue is of real concern- be sure to check the frame area under where the barrel threads into the frame- open the cylinder and illuminate this area well- this condition cannot be repaired and there are no replacement frames in existence so be ever vigilant- cracked frames can fail catastrophically when fired-

I've a 12-2 that's a favorite carry gun.
Much prefer it over a "J" frame.

I got a deal on one a couple years ago, or at least I thought it was a deal til I had a chance to examine it in good lighting.... frame was cracked.

You really had to look hard to see it. Right on the flat part 6 o'clock under the bbl. Nothing more than a thin line. Darned gun show lighting. I take a flashlight with me now.

Gladly pay another $100 to buy one from a gun store.

I've asked this before....does the cracked frame pose a real hazard in shooting the gun? There have been many reports of discovering a cracked airweight frame-- has anyone ever had a gun come apart due to one? Seems like you'd need a hell of an over-pressure load to cause the crack to sprad apart enough to be a problem.
