I know generally speaking that free floating the barrel will help improve accuracy.

However, it seems that out of the box the m&p10 is already very accurate. I'm shooting sub moa with match ammo out of the box.

So for those of you that have free floated the barrel on your m&p10, did you see any real difference in accuracy?

the gun just looks better with a free float tube rather than that dinky plastic handguard.

I put Magpul FDE STR butstock, MIAD grip, and MOE handguard furniture on mine. I put a polymer rail on the bottom with a bipod mount with a Harris Bipod. Mine is near MOA accurate. I like it like it is. Of course, if I had a lot more money, I might probably try a Floating Handguard, probably a 13+" Troy Alpha. I may have already reached the point of deminishing returns. I took that flash suppressor off and put a thread protector in it's place, reduced the OAL by 2.7".

Yeah that's almost identical to my setup. Except mine's the heavy barrel model that isn't threaded to begin with...

It just doesn't seem worth it to drop $300 to free float...i like the look, but it's a lot of $$ to put into a rifle if it doesn't do anything other than look cool...

CC426, Have you thought about putting on a muzzle break? I have the heavy barrel as well and just purchased the surefire muzzle break w/ the intent of putting on a suppressor (moving to Europe). Any advise, will the muzzle break help the accuracy? Plan on using my MP10 for hunting...

If I free float the barrel I will put a brake one it since the barrel needs to be removed to thread it, it makes sense to do it all at once.

I've heard a muzzle break will help with accuracy since it reduces recoil and will help you flinch less when shooting. However, i dont think it makes the rifle Inherently more accurate. For hunting the reduced recoil would help with faster target acquisition for followup shots just in case you didn't get a clean hit with the first one. It would significantly increase the sound profile though

My problem is that the gun shoots very well already, so why dump another couple hundred bucks into it if it won't do much for functionality...

Here is a pic of mine with a Troy TRX-308

I haven't shot is yet to get a assessment.

You get a chance to shoot it yet to give us a range report? :)

Yes I sure did, I was sighting in my scope at 50 yrds. And my first three shots were all touching. My grouping was/is alot tighter than with the hand guard. This week (Wensday) I'll post some picks from 100 yrd. All my ammo is off the shelve it was PRVI PARTIZAN 165 grain that I was shooting. Very consitant ammo and pretty clean to boot.
I hope this helps

Cheers

I see that this thread is a bit old but I have the same goal . . . replacing the original hand guard. I'm new to hand guards and what I haven't been able to find in any forums is . . . are they all AR-15 and AR-10 compatible? So as I shop around, do I have to be concerned that it is made for one or the other? I want to go rifle length, which I assume is the next size up from mid-length, and I am taking the suggestion on the YHM-9383.

So far the rail I like is Rock River Arms AR0010GA . . . RRA Advanced Half Quad with Full Length Top Rail, Rifle Length. Would this work for the M&P 10?

Hey "Rut", rail systems are NOT the same for the AR-15/AR-10. Do a quick search at Brownell's or Midway and you will see the different offerings. The AR-10 and its relatives are similar to the AR-15, but in simple terms are larger, therefore only certian parts are common between them, like handgrips and some butt stocks.
Hope this helps a little.

Thanks Sgt! Were you able to look at the link I posted? In your web travels...have you seen one similar to it that is made for the AR-10?

I just purchased the MI-AR10SS12-A MI AR10 12-inch Rifle SS Series One Piece Free Float, black. I hope this is the correct one because they made one for "DPMS" which I am uncertain what that actually means. DPMS or Armalite . . . what's the difference?

Thank you very much for that tidbit of info! I was able to get my order changed, although it's on back order 2-3 wks.

MI-308SS12-DL MI DPMS .308/7.62 NATO SS-Series One Piece Free Float Handguard, .150 Upper Tang, 12-inch Rifle Length

I've never dealt with Midwest Industries before...they were very friendly and a great help. Will definitely bookmark them and return as a customer.

Rut-n-buck,

Make sure it is a DPMS LOW PROFILE version. High Profile will not work.

I put the TRX 308 on mine and while I like it, as I have the AR15 version on my AR15's, I'm not sure I like the clamping system it uses. Seems a bit weak but we will see. I really like the MI you are considering and I will likely change it out in the future.

Good luck and post pics when you are done of the MI.

Mac
