Fun Thread: What are your top 5 unicorn/rare 3rd gens?

Could be. Can't remember. But I have posted pics of one.;)

Now that is just cruel and unusual punishment posting that. That is the ultimate S&W 3rd gen gun in my opinion.

Frankly, just about any of the .45 3rd Gen's are a unicorn for me right now. I haven't touched one since I left the WVSP 3 years ago. I love my current gig and I like my issued G22, but I miss my old .45!

I sure wish S&W would crank out a few of the new WVSP style 4566's for the civilian market. Heck, I'd even go for a CHP 4006 with the integral rail.

Necro thread, but interesting topic. Don't intend to be a "fun killer" but when we talk about normal(ish) production guns that they happened to make a precious few of -- my favorite ones are the guns that YOU GUYS own. Enthusiasts, who take great pictures and share the fun.

They are great to read about & see but I couldn't keep one. It's only "special" because it's extremely short-printed. It literally isn't capable of anything different than the mainstream one in the common size/finish that they made 300,000 of... So for me, it's a very cool thing that ties up money and can reduce the size of that money if I put wear on it, so my best use of them is to ogle the ones you guys have. ;)

My rarest S&W pistols:
1006 (maybe 20,000 of these made)
745 (around 5,000)
845 (...650 of them?)
639 with fixed sights

My 5906 isn't rare and shows tons of LE duty carry wear, but it is one of the bright (not brushed/matte) finished 5906's.

Five I want most:
952-2 Long Slide
PPC9
5" DPA5906
-any- PC single action with 5" barrel, any caliber
Model 52-2

Problem is that (especially the Long Slide 952) is worth such ridiculous cash... there is no possible way I could justify the purchase unless it was a steal. And if it was a steal, would be almost impossible to not sell it for market price and use that $$$ to chase multiple great handguns.

Seriously, didn't intend to be a downer! :)

3rd GENS I OWN

New buyer here; since April I have found the following.

4006
3906
5906

That's all for now. Searching for a 45 cal.

Very interesting thread, I had no idea there were so many funky/cool 3rd gen variants built. Makes my humble stash of 'regular' 3rd gen's seem...........humble.:D

The first two pictured of your outrageous collection would be
My favorites. Extremely cool stuff you've shown. :D

Wow, thanks everyone. Finding out that a few of mine, (that I didn't really care about that much,) are on someones want list, makes me appreciate them again. My LNIB 3904 with Novak sights was on my "get rid of" list. Guess I won't.

WOW!!! Now, that was a super-humbling experience!!! :D My head is still spinning!!! ;) I'm a little light-headed and dizzy! :p

Makes my humble stash of 'regular' 3rd gen's seem...........humble.:D
Geesus Christmas!!! :D I guess so!!! :p

Every one of the 3rd Gens I've been able to score so far are "Plain Jane" standard catalog guns. :o Every last one! What am I doing wrong?
  • Not a single PC gun so far. :(
  • Not a single TSW gun so far. :(
  • Not a single cop special order gun so far. :(
  • Not a single distributor special so far. :(
  • Not a single 10mm gun so far. :(
  • Not even a .22LR 3rd Gen so far. :(
I could pull the Massachusetts "no imports" card I suppose as my excuse. Or the "poor old retired man living in poverty" card? Or both???

Oh well. :) I'm still having fun. :D That's what matters. ;)

Always love it when Smithnut shows up........ as TTSH said ...."humbling".

I've been accumulating 3rd Gen Smith's since 1989/90 .... starting with a transitional 6906.....long gone.... for a round trigger guard 6906 with Novack's.

My first PC gun was a SD-9; an all steel gun, with a 4 1/4" slide/barrel on a steel 6906 frame. Being all steel this gun is like shooting a 9mm......that feels like a .22. But it's a bit heavy for everyday carry.

The SD-9 was soon followed by a unmarked "Shorty 9".... which became my hi-cap carry gun. Hey back in the day; who knew that PC guns were going to be in such short supply 20 years later... kind of like Registered Magnums in 1938..... you could buy all you wanted or could afford at $60 a pop.

Last year for "s____ts and giggles" and because of the bad influence of GunHobbit...... I built a Frankinsmith....... a matt silver Cerecoated (sp?) 6904 frame with a 915 upper....... giving me a alloy frame, reverse two-tone, 690X with a 4 inch barrel/slide.

This combo has really grown on me as a hi-cap carry gun..... carried inside waist band..... the extra 1/2 inch of barrel tucks away nicely.... but gives a bit of extra sight radius and maybe an extra 50-70 FPS.....and is still relatively light and well balanced in the hand.

Would love to see the PC build this gun on a 6906 frame w/ a 5904 Novak night-sight upper............... w/ a full hammer.

To OP's original question........ my everyday carry are a 3913NL; backed up in cooler months by a 3914......... so:

I would love to find a 3914NL..... for a "salt and pepper" / "summer/winter" set of carry guns.
